Good morning everyone...

File Transfer software,

Can any of you clever people advise me as to the best way to transfer a (quite big file) from my London office to my Portuguese Lake Side office...

Obviously I have no desire to part with any money given that this action will not be repeated often...

Thanks in advance...

JJ

PS. all the "free trial" offers seem to need me to sign up first...with selected payment plan etc... never remember to cancel on time...

The absolutely simplest way is to email it as an attachment. Depends on size. ZIP might make a huge difference.

Too big for Gmail 400 mbs...

David

We tried that and Skype refused to co-operate!

If a web site is available the London office could use FTP to load the file and set up a page from where you can download it.

London Office tried to do that via Cuteftp.com but failed (Apple user... doesn't really know what he is doing!)

Me? I would drag it onto an external drive then drag it onto the other pooter. Simples :thumb:

This would work well but there is a sea and quite a lot of land between the two computers...

Post... P O S T? What is this strange thing you speak of? (Hymer has no address and rather wanted to complete the task before my afternoon swim in the lake :winky:

Thanks for all the help so far though... keep it coming :thumb:

I thought of that too.. but on checking Gdocs max file size is only 1mb
etc

Thats only if you are converting a doc to a Google docs format. Ive got zip files of 60mb in mine at the mo

info from Gdocs site

Docs you create and files you upload have some limits built in.

Documents: 512,000 characters, regardless of the number of pages or font size. Uploaded document files that are converted to Google documents format can’t be larger than 1MB.

Spreadsheets: 400,000 cells, with a maximum of 256 columns per sheet. Uploaded spreadsheet files that are converted to Google spreadsheets format can’t be larger than 20MB, and need to be under 400,000 cells and 256 columns per sheet.

More information about spreadsheet size limits
Presentations: Presentations created in Google Docs can be up to 10MB -- which is about 200 slides. Uploaded presentation files that are converted into Google presentations format can also be up to 10MB.

Drawings: We’ve never seen anyone make a drawing that was too big (but that’s not a dare).

Other files: Files that you upload but don’t convert to Google Docs format take up to a total of 10GB. That can be all one file if you want -- the upload limit is 10GB, too. (If you need more than 1GB of storage space for your files, you can view pricing plans for additional Google Docs storage.)

So assuming JJ transfers a Zipped file, it could be upto 1GB in the basic Gdocs service - and meets the zero cost criteria!!!

I have used this free file transfer system successfully for a few years now.
http://www.sendthisfile.com/

Register for a free account and you can send one file at a time. (More files and faster if you have a paid-for account.) I have used it typically to send 20 - 40 MB presentations. The recipient (you) gets an e-mail containing a link which, when clicked, downloads the file.

Dropbox every time.

If you really need to send it by email, use HJSplit, which splits the file up or down into whatever bitesize chunks you need. Then rather laboriously you can send each chunk in an individual email. Then re-combine at the other end with the same - FREE - program.

Drop box is another option. https://www.dropbox.com/

You both need to sign up, then as the name implies you "mate" drops it in the box and you pick it up.

I use for large files, mate sends me old tv shows only fool etc.

Have either of you got any webspace? Filezilla is a free program. The sender can upload the file to the webspace using filezilla and then the receiver just rightclick and save the file.

It doesn't really matter if one of you is sat in London and the other in Portugal but it does help if you are on the same planet with internet connection ::bigsmile:::bigsmile:

Well done you wonderful Funsters...

The Outcome Report...

Cuteftp wouldn't work on my friend/colleague's computer (Mac) and while obviously it could if he pressed the right buttons and/or downloaded the right software we moved onto...

Dropbox which is truly brilliant and we were sharing photos instantly... sadly maximum size was 300 mbs and we needed 430mbs so we moved onto...

Fileserve which has done/is doing the job as I type this...

Thanks to everyone (especially Douzeper, who wins a Fray Bentos Pie of his/her choice for providing the solution we eventually used)

JJ

I LOVE technology when it works... as the file will take a couple of hours to download through my thingy I might as well go and sit by the lake and watch the world go by...
