Hi,

Just a quick ne for the electrical experts.

I'm going to change my leisure battery for a new one, and I'm wondering if all I need do is to disconnect the old one, and fit a new one??

Any special precautions?? I know that the terminals will be live because of the solar panel.

Should I leave it to a dealer?

Thanks,

Doug

no special precautions....just ensure the pos lead doesnt touch earth and all 12v stuff is turned off....tv etc...as the solar panel may output up to 17v when no battery connected.

better still...do it after dark, no solar charge then :winky:

You could also just cover the solar panel to keep the light out........then you would at least be able to work in daylight!

Go to your solar panel regulator and disconnect one (not both) of the wires from the solar panel.

Then the charge isn't getting to the battery so no problem ::bigsmile:

Not sure if all regulators are the same but mine say's remove the battery wires first and replace battery wires last, this must protect the regulator.

Also

There is a large fuse at my battery which if the ops has the same i would remove that.

According to Detroit solar who fitted mine you must disconnect the panel from the controller before disconnecting the battery as the relatively high voltage and current from the panel can damage the controller. There is usually a fuse you can remove, or alternatively as suggested earlier, cover the panel.

I have just done a Google search for which to remove first and have found both are said to remove first :Eeek:

My regulator instructions clearly stated remove battery first and replace battery last.

So what to do?

On my regulator which has a relay switch to turn the charge off and on, removing the battery first makes the relay chatter. It would seem that regulators are not all the same.
