I may be wrong, but I think you need one of them square red & white boards with stripes going from corner to corner a little reflector in each corner for anything that sticks out past your bumper..

As said I may be wrong...

You should use one of those square boards with red and white stripes and reflectors, available from Johns Cross (other accessory shops are available) which are a legal requirement in some countries for anything that sticks out at the back of your vehicle.

'Long vehicle' signs are not required for motorhomes.

As a bit of an aside I have seen 'on tow' signs on toads, this is illegal as the whole basis of A frame towing is that the car is legally a trailer, and not a broken down vehicle.

Yes they are if the motor home or caravan outfit is over 12m and they no longer say, 'Long Vehicle'

They look like this.

Got nicked in Irun once for not having a long vehicle sign on my trailer behind the RV. Tried blagging em with "Its a motorhome, not a HGV". They were having none of it. Cost me 150 Emuse.

I wonder if the average driver knows what that sign means? And I wonder if the average driver thinks artics are short?

As far as I know you don't need one for France but you do for Spain/Portugal and Italy. From a safety point of view and on the basis that the EU will soon catch up it might be prudent to get one (just the diagonal red/white).
