Hi all,

Over the Easter break we had (what we now know as) a gearbox main bearing failure, which basically trashed the box.

The van Is a 3 Litre Bessacar E789 picked up new in march 09, now has 9600 miles on it.

Lucky for us the Fiat/swift Third year warranty has covered the cost of a gear box rebuild.

Now on picking her up today and driving her the 60 odd miles back home, I have noticed a slight whine in 5th and 6th when I take my foot off the accelerator.

I thought maybe something just needs to bed in a little, so not too concerned on the drive home.

I reported it straight away to the garage that had done the work who advised to give it a few miles and see what happens, fair enough I thought.

My question is, what do you think the whine could be?

Thanks.

Pat.

wrongly shimmed gears on the main or layshaft.

the whine will be the gears ever so slightly out of mesh due to mis-shimming....new gearbox's dont whine, do they !!!!

modern gearbox's are critical on tolerances/clearances.

Thanks for that, not the news I wanted to hear to be honest!

So is it a case of them taking it apart and putting it back together correctly? Or are the parts supplied faulty?

Thanks.

Not many garages will get involved in a gearbox rebuild/repair
We for instance ship out the gearbox to a specialist after we have removed it
You don't say what gear or gears its whining in
It could be a multitude of problems and would be pure speculation It wants road testing by the box builder if they used one, removing and rectifying, if its only 5th gear whining then its possibly just a local repair via the end plate
It has to go back, No ifs and's or buts

more likely rebuilt by someone without the special skills needed to rebuild a 'box.

anyone with a little knowledge can take one apart, but putting it back together correctly is a highly skilled job.

Cheers John, missed that bit:thumb:
If its only on over run its possible it may settle after a few more miles, but should have been thoroughly rod tested prior to you getting it back, so you would never have heard anything:thumb:
How long have they suggested you run before they are willing to have it back in

I think he said give it a couple of weeks, which in a way forces me to use the van when I haven't made any plans.

All so if they are local trips it means I could have the problem for a while? She's got to go in for a hab service on Monday. So I think we will have an away weekend following.

After that and if it's still there, I'll give them another call and escalate it.

Does anyone know if Fiat will actually call me to see if repairs are complete. I must say up till now they have been very informative!

Thanks for the replies, great site this.

Hi all,

Just a little update for those interested, The van went back to the garage last Monday 6th June.

I rang today for an update and was told the box had been stripped again and all was in order but there still seems to be a whine. I was advised that they would call me back when the person I dealt with has had a word with someone else .

Now it's obvious they are struggling here but I'm a little concerned that they may come back to me and say it's ok and you will have to live with it.

Obviously I'm jumping to conclusions; but where would I stand if that were to be the case?

Anyone had anything similar?

Many thanks

Pat

I can only advise you of what would satisfy me personaly,
It would be a whine free box, end off.
If that means Fiat supplying a brand new box (At their expense) then so be it.
The repair even though done under warranty free, has not come up to an exceptable standard

surly if its only done less than 10,000 miles its not fit for purpose.
just watch them come back and say something like its due to it not doing enough miles and the oil all draining into the bottom of the gearbox thus drying out the bearings.

more like shit design fiat should have got this gearbox sorted out before releasing it.
what with all the reverse judder problems due to the wrong reverse ratio being fitted.

also i don't see the point of 6th gear on this box because with mine also a 3 litre fiat has to be doing at least 60 mph before i can select 6th otherwise it nearly stalls the engine and at 5 tons the speed limit for me on a motorway is 60mph. in my opinion its a complete waste of space they should have lowered the diff ratio.

Just an update for anyone interested.

The garage has been unable to fix the whine, so are now awaiting a recon box from Fiat.

Hope this is the end of it but would of liked the sound of a new box. It does say in the warranty guff that if Fiat see's fit they can at their discretion fit recon (by them) parts.

Happy days.

if its a genuine fiat reconditioned unit, the only bit you get thats second hand is the casing....ever item inside and out will be new :thumb:

Hello all,

Well got the van back last week and all seems ok with the replacement box. Just hope I get more than 9500 miles use out of it.

Thanks all for the help and guidance.
