Hi has anyone been to France quite recently, could you give me the apprx cost of diesel per litre if you have, trying to do France on a shoestring. Also how much apprx are the road tolls, ie on A29 etc and is 105.00 return Dover to Calais p&o good?

Any info would help. Thx Gail

Sorry, didn't see your q about P&O. Have you looked at Norfolk Line Dover to Dunkerque? They were a lot cheaper when I came back in March. Sea France also does cheap delas. I always find P&O and train are the dearest.

... and remember that you don't need to use the toll roads. If you're not in a hurry the N roads are free and very quiet. You see real France that way and also pass through towns with signs to aires.

Didnt use tolls when the roads were running next to them. Were not in any hurry so I suppose makes a difference then.

We are in the morvan district at Nevers, on our way through the least we have paid is 1.34a litre. I have heard of a card in some garages that let you have it at .1.28 a litre if you have a card. Anyone know about that over here?
Some kind if local , loyalty or discount card I was told by another camper.haven't met many English people over here, just about 3 couples.
Where are you all?.By the way anyone know if this acsi campsite we are in was ever an Aire?got the same bourne As an aire would. Bit more expensive than one. Not sure if it is a municipal though, very close to town.lovely cathedral by the way.

Wow! Where was that? Cheapest I can find around here is €1.28 and €1.32 at some s/markets.

You did what I did. The post you quoted was in pounds. Yours was in Euros.

By the way, how do you get the Euro sign to type out?

Steve

We are going out with Norfolk Line in August return 4 weeks later in September, £68 return for a 7 metre van + a 4 bike rack on the back.

P&O wanted about £115 and that was supposed to be a promo offerif I remember.

Always fill up up the big hypermarket petrol stations, never on the Autoroutes or at small garages, same as here, they will be much more expensive.

If you are not in a rush, just avoid the toll roads. In general the roads in France are much quieter than UK, especially away from the big city conurbations, but most autoroutes are free around the cities, or have small fixed prices tolls.
Use the N roads and D roads, most of the autoroutes have one or other close by, almost in parallel as they were there before the Autoroutes were built.

Better still get a Michelin map and follow the roads which are highlighted with a green line.

This means scenic route. Some of the nicest roads I have travelled were found by just following the Michelin "green lines" on the roads.:thumb::thumb:

Price of diesel

We're currently on an ACSI at Auxonne nr Dijon. Have bought two lots of diesel since coming over last week. €1.29l at a Carrefour near St Omer and €1.285l at Chaumont on the way down to Auxonne at a Geant Casino. Didn't strictly need it but experience dictates that you fill up when it's cheap and don't wait until you're desperate. Funny thing is, we've noticed that a supermarket might be selling at those sort of of prices only just up the road from a Fina or Texaco selling at as much as €1.49l. That's a big difference on a full tank. At home the presence of an ultra cheap Asda or Sainsbury generally reins in the surrounding prices.
Also, would definitely endorse the comments about avoiding toll roads and sticking to N and D roads, especially the green bordered ones on Michelin (and other) maps. The French IGN series (equivalent to our Ordnance Survey) are also really good.
Setting off in the morning to follow the Cote d'Or wine route from Dijon to Beaune, meandering on and off the N74 and looking for a France Passion overnight. It's a real pain, isn't it!
