b) What is the ideal all round lense,

I use a canon 450 .Suggest you get hold of this book for a starter :-

Also buy a good lens don't waste your money on a cheap one you will regret it.
I use a Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM
lens and this stays on the camera all the time , a good all rounder . Try Ebay for a good 2nd hand buy make sure you get one with a lens protector all ready on it so that you know it won't be scratched.

I have a Canon EOS 40D and the lens I use the most is a Tamron 18 - 250 zoom. I also have a Canon 17 - 85 zoom and a Canon 10 - 22 wideangle which is very good for scenes and ultra close up work.
I prefer the Canon lenses but are more expensive.I bought the Tamron for its zoom range , the picture quality is good. Tamron now do an 18 - 270 but its over £400, ouch.

PS
Am now starting to experiment with RAW images , could be a while to figure it.
Also a good tripod and monopod with the long lens will help keep pics sharp.

I agree, that's a great lens, I use one a lot, but on a full frame canon, so the 28mm is a true 28, on your camera its not very wide about 45mm equivalent, but at the other end its 200mm This suits most people, and makes that lens great for portraits and candids:thumb:

Cheers guys, but is it fast enough to catch 'Shane Williams' in full flight? LOL LOL

So a Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM is the one....

Ahh.... if it's Shane you want to photograph, present performance suggests this should do nicely, a one minute exposure of him during a match and it will be pin sharp::bigsmile:
