I have not actually checked yet but there is a chance that my Dream Hymer 660 has a hole somewhere in its twenty-three year old exhaust system...

Do any Funsters have experience of a stainless steel exhaust manufacturer and would they be able to make up one from measurements and photos.

Always fancied a stainless exhaust ::bigsmile:

PS. Yet another glouriously sunny day... HOORAY...

They should be able to make one from a patern. It is the standard exhaust fitted to all Mercedes 410D (transporter) I believe.

Go on-line to Link Removed and they have a diagram with part numbers as well as price list. I have a printout of the page for the 410D 91-95

Given that info I would have thought that a firm could make up one in stainless steel to fit.

Hi JJ - Stainless Steel exhausts are fairly expensive beasts ( at least double the cost ) compared to the mild steel version but are generally guarenteed for life so if you plan on keeping the Hymer for another 23 years would be a good investment :Eeek: Doubt any manufacturer would be able to make one from drawings and measurements .Double S at Cullumpton Devon 01884 33454 are one of the main line manufactures for many retailers and supply under their own brand 'SS' they will have a vast range of off the shelf. They may have the combination of parts you want or feasably have the jigs for it but from experience a full bespoke system for one they do not hold jigs for is very pricey.

and besides SS dont often muffle the sound as good as mild steel as they are often thinner

Hi JJ,IMO for the mileage you do with the Hymer and the climate that its in,I would stick with mild steel, its a bog standard Merc system so shouldnt cost the earth, and as said before stainless are noisier than mild steel.

We're in the same boat and I phoned the local LongLife guys. Interestingly, the man talked me out of a more expensive stainless steel exhaust - saying that the combination of stainless and heavy vibrating diesel engine don't make a good combination.

Methinks he might have been tryiing to sell you what he had in stock - as that does not make a lot of sense to me as they are the prefered fitment to Land Rover defenders (heavy diesel + off road use) and are a must have for lorry drivers blinging their lorries up (Enitox very heavy diesel ) - I have fitted hundreds to Land Rovers and never had a problem except explaining to people that stainless is expensive

Had a complete Longlife SS system fitted at their Caerphilly branch 3 years ago in my 2.8JTD Hymer.

Superb service, re-routed the exhaust to improve the gas flow and welded it all on the vehicle.

I noticed an improvement in performance due to the better exhaust exit and a much quieter exhaust note.

Reason for replacement was corroded tail pipe section ( 1 metre of mild steel pipe) which Al-Ko wanted close to £200 without fitting. Complete system, including two silencer boxes, from manifold to tail pipe was £370 fitted.

No-brainer really and as the rear box has just gone on our Honda Jazz I am off to Longlife for a new SS system from the catalysor to tail pipe for £289 fitted. Honda parts in mild steel £320 fitted.

Thanks to both Landy Lover and Pat. Fortunately I haven't actually done anything yet, so will reconsider getting a stainless steel.

I got my suppliers mixed up: It was actually the Powerflow dealer in Swindon that said to not use SS.
I think I'll get hold of the Longlife dealer in Basingstoke. Anyone dealt with them?

Am just about to arrange a visit for the old Hymer to a specialist exhaust company in Pombal (central Portugal)... will keep Funsters informed...
