Tried about 5 or 6 companies now and they are all telling me the same thing or giving extortionate rates

Can anyone with an American Pick Up give me the insurance company contact details please. Never had this problem before

Insurance seems to be rocketing. I've been with NFU for years but this years renewal was nearly double last years. Shopped around but still up by nearly £200.

Probably a long shot cos I dont know if they "do" yanks but have you tried Chris Knot insurance? They specialise in 4X4's and the quote they gave me for a Kia Sorrento was litterally hundreds less than anyone else.

They said the insurance company lost £380 million last year and have laid of hundreds of staff so now dont have the resources to do specialised insurance like USA imports

Hi Dazzer
Not the same problem as yourself, I will be away for nearly 4 months when my car Insurance is due early March, I had my son in law on as a named driver which wasn't required for next year, I phoned up Elephant Insurance (Halifax) to try and find out my new premium as I will be away when its due, i mentioned that I would be away for an extended holiday, I was then informed I will not be able to renew my cover as I will not be in the country and they don't Insure vehicles that are not being used by anyone, so the only thing I could do is cancel the cover on renewal, I will garage the car and sort it out on return i have not heard of that one before. Pete :Angry:

Just a word of warning for all

Hi Peter

It is not unusual your house insurance will do the same if they know, and as you know insurance companys will worm out of everything they can.

Most of them only cover up to 90 days out of the country.

All the best Rick.

sounds like you did the online 'phone me back' option

pick up the phone and ring them....they should quote on the phone and even sell at the same time via credit/debit card.. :thumb:

if your local branch doesnt help then try a different regional office

Hi Rick
Thanks for you post, I know re household Insurance but I had never heard of car Insurance being withdrawn when not in the country for extended periods, like we all do when going to the continent, Reading the post on Insurance being now legal for vehicles that are taxed requiring Insurance I will SORN It before we go and stick it in the garage then sort it out later. Many Thanks Peter :thumb::thumb:

Hi Peter if you sorn it and put it in the garage, if you have household cover that will extend the 90 day rule you may be able to add the car to contents cover so at least you will be insured fire and theft.

Insurance was so much easier in the US we used to leave the car in the garage for 9 months and reduce the cover to minimum which was equivalent fire and theft.

Hope this helps Rick.

Well what an adventure this has turned out to be!!

Im still waiting on a price from NFU (now 5 phone calls and no prices!!!)

Ive had prices ranging from £ 350.00 ::bigsmile: to £ 1650.00  for fully comp.

The best deal was from MCE at £ 350.00 including a bit of business use and only a £100 excess and £ 50.00 windscreen. The paperworks in the post and it should all be sorted by Wednesday next week :thumb:

A huge thank you :thanks: to Motor Roamin Rick :notworthy::notworthy:for his suggestions on who to contact.

Thanks again to all that offered suggestions :thumb::thumb:
