Well, with Spain going pear shaped I've got to have something to look forward to.

I loved Sorrento. Flew there for a week last time. So this time, drive there.

I'm thinking down France to the Med and round to Florence, Rome, Naples, Sorrento.

Sept 2011.

It's about 1300 miles from Calais to Sorrento.

We stayed here in 2005, September, weather was just perfect for Brits.

I feel warmer and happier just posting this.

There's half a dozen in the ACSI book. Plus Pompeii.

Come to think of it, the weather was more than good, we took the boat to Capri and baked, did not do the place justice, it was too hot.

My dream is firming up:

Reims, Troyes, Dijon, Lyon, Grenoble, Gap, Nice round the Med, Firenza, Roma, Naples, Sorrento.

We last did Route Napoleon in the rain on a bike, never saw it, so we might this time or at worse we'll be dry. The Italian Job 1 fills in the Med cost.

This is not intended as a meet, just a route and if anyone wants to share a glass or two at any point they are of course welcome.

We did that area in October 2008 - 'twas fantastic!

We stayed at Camping Spartacus in Pompeii for about a week. Bit jaded but we were very rarely on-site! Eating out etc in Pompeii is a total rip-off! But hey ho - it's a tourist trap!
Train services excellent in that area.
Day 1 was train to Sorrento and open-top bus tour.
Day 2 train again and ferry to Capri, funicular up to Capri Town (looked for Gracie Fields but she wasn't there!) . Stunning views!:thumb:
Day 3 we did the Pompeii ruins - awesome!
Day 4 was another train trip to Sorrento then local bus service to Positano, lunch then another local bus to Amalfi. - Totally gob-smacking day!
Day 5 train to Naples and a visit to the museum to see the artifacts from Pompeii! Crazy Naples!!:roflmto::roflmto:

Vesuvius is worth a visit - chilling experience at times - we had visited it in 2005 so didn't feel the need to do it again yet!

Lost count of how many photos I took that week!:Eeek:

From there we went to Rome (Happy Camping or something like that!) and had a week of sightseeing and oohing and aahing - totally knackered after that!
Rome is awesome - the mix of old and new - religious and historic - breath-taking - loved every minute!:Smile
We could easily spend another week in Rome and not repeat too much - so much to see and a superb Hard Rock Cafe!!!::bigsmile:::bigsmile:::bigsmile:

Prior to all that we had "done" Venice (Camping Fusina) ( FANTASTIC!!) then down the Adriatic to the heel then the toe then Sicily (well a bit of it - Catania - memorably forgettable and Camping Rais Gerbi at Finale - heaven!!)

6 weeks in Italy and we were all cultured out and headed quickly as we could to Zahora to rest the little grey cells!!:ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

So, those of you that decide to go - well worth the experience!:thumb::thumb:

Here we go again......

The object of the Italian Job 1 was to infect people with an incurable virus called Italy. We caught it by watching the TV holiday programs, first time was Lake Maggiore about 1993 and we returned just about every other year since.

I think Italian Job 1 was a success. Already the virus is breaking out in those infected.

What was not quite right about IJ1 was it ended up too much of a "tour" with fixed dates. That is not the spirit of motorhoming. We stayed a bit too long on Garda because we'd already done it twice. But I'd made this schedule and had to stick to it.

IJ2 if anyone wants to tag along for any part dates will be very approximate and co-ordinated by FUN, phone or face to face. Definitely no booked sites. Live dangerously. If I/we stumble on a special site and good weather, then no pressure to rush off. That's how it should be.

I've just written IJ2 in pencil on Sept 1st.

You're a lot tougher than we are. 3 weeks and I could not look another painting in the face. They are mostly so damned depressing. Battles blood, gore, crucifictions. What happened to happy ?

Train, boat and bus work a treat round Naples/Sorrento, the roads are so congested and driving so bad it's the cheap safe option.

Similar Rome. We stayed on the coast, spent the evenings on magnificent beaches and took the train into Rome for I think 3 euros.

Euro Holidays.

What are French holidays ? Would the last week in August be a safe starting date ?

I'm conscience of October being right after September if you get my drift.

Would we have problems with the August Bank Holidays? Motorway packed and crowded ferries?

I have a notion that many french take August off so there is a jam on the !st August going out and the 31 August going back in.

Perhaps one of the Funsters who lives in France can tell us?

The Italiano infection is taking hold,
Chrisboyo N Liz

An evil cackle is heard echoing round Cheshire.

You've had tourist Italy, you've had rich recent Italy. Time for Roman Italy.

To stand in the Colosseum and think, "The pillocks made such a fuss of building Wembley Stadium but this is 2000 years older and look at it.". Or Circus Maximus, "Where is there today that can entertain a crowd of 250,000". Or Herculaneum, "If I was rich I'd want a place like this today". Or Sorrento, "do I have go home ?".

Nah, you wouldn't want to do that.
