You can make add on rails quite simply assuming you can weld. We extended our rails on one of ours and adopted the same fitment as the current rails. Quite simple.

What type of box do you have? An aero type box is best, and ideally hide behind something else. If you have an air con unit, put it behind that to reduce drag. Also look at the luton, and see if it can be placed behind that. Some rise up and swoop back down, which will give so much height advantage - use that if you possibly can. It can also 'level' the roof height out - but do check if your height is effected afterwards!

Pardon ?

You mean there are people who can't ?

I didn't know the country had sunk that low.

Only a couple of hours ago, mate bolt with head sheared off. Weld on mate nut and remove. Surely everyone can do this.

was that Mig Tig Arc or oxy/acetylene there brian ??
have not used Tig yet but looking forward to it.

Like you need a hole in the head really.

You don't want weight high up.

You'll probably pay more on ferries.

A bit more drag.

How desperate are you ?

Although it deeply pains me to say so, Hilldweller is right.

Our top box is a bloody nuisance. Especially in Italy where they have many, many unsignposted low railway bridges. Only by luck have we survived without a serious crash & court case! Bin it!

Seriously.

MIG.

I've got an old oxy/mapgas set, somewhere, but MIG rules.

I'll admit my ali welding looks more like bird droppings, luckily I hardly ever need that. I just made a binocular mount in ali but managed to make it look good with the magnificent Plastic Padding Chemical Metal.

I used to love brazing.
