I am about to retire:thumb:, where would the funsters recommend we go for the winter in europe, as we dont want a repeat of the snow and ice like last winter:Angry:, we dont mind the rain, we prefer if it didnt, say go for January and Febuary, have come back for a 40th birthday in March 2011

As suggested .. South Spanish coast

However, the winter just past wasn't that great .. if you have the inclination cross to Morocco and down the Atlantic coast, this is where thousands of French, German, Dutch and an increasing number of Brits go for the winter. The weather is generally warmer and drier than Spain, sites and fuel is are also cheaper.

You don't need a tour guide, or package, and you can get cheap crossings, the road down the Atlantic coast is modern, much of it brand new Motorway ..

Of course, if want to see the real Morocco you really need head inland ... a breathtaking country that is ideal for mororhomes.. an unforgettable experience.

Spoain ain't that reliable for the weather. Last Winter was bad...
Try Scicily. Cheaper than the rest of Italy and even Spain, much warmer and more relaxed.
There is a boat from Genoa for about €300 to save you the drive if you want. Last Winter we paid €7/night for a month's stay.

Even Ray said that last winter he'd never seen such bad weather in Morocco.

Fingers crossed it was just a freak year. Trouble is, every year is turning out a freak year.

indeed, at this rate, in a couple of decades we might be going north to escape the heat ..

but the further south the better the odds

I was thinking of going down to Sicily over the Xmas / New Year period but thought it might be a bit quiet. Which month were you there and were there many other campers about? Plenty of sites open?

Sicilly is beautiful and I know you would love it.

Chiclana de la frontera in southern spain is pleasant and they have a lovely campsite there.

Many in here don't have that luxury.

What does seem consistent in the UK is a lot more wind and a lot more rain. This year was the first time in 30 years we had "walk home" snow up here. When southern Spain experiences snow it's time to take note. If you remember a year or two ago Nice had the first snow in living memory.

I think "global warming" is a very inaccurate phrase. "Massive weather change" better describes what we are all seeing.

yes, most of the sites were open.
The place was quite busy, mostly Scandanavians but a few Brits as well. We were warned off Catania as being not pretty and too urban. Of course we loved it - very busy active city. Most people seem to prefer the South East coast which is a lot prettier and very rural so quiet.
Camping Jonio in Catania and Scarebeo in the Southeast are both good. As campsites, the latter is better but if you enjoy local hustle & bustle, the former.
We spent four and a half months on the Island. Everyone said you must go all the way round but somehow we got mesmerised by Catania from December through to April.
