Since 2009 with motorhomes several caravans then tents before that.
Ralph has been to the weigh bridge today to check the weight of the van.

He had a full tank of fuel, 2 full gas bottles , generator and everything on board needed , except me and the kids .
The weights were,
Front 1680
Rear 1940
giving the total of 3620

He noticed that under the bonnet there was a plaque fitted saying,
This vehicle has been fitted with camping car package 057 , with a new gross vehicle weight of 3850KG
(It was originally plated at 3500KG)

Once me, kids, and the dogs are added into the equasion we are very close to the 3850KG
Theres a few things in , that can come out that we never use.

Heres the question,

We already have camping car suspension and tyres on the MH . Does this mean that our motorhome has already had the weight upgrade thing done, which everyone was on about last week. Or would it be able to be taken higher up to the 4.1 ton level. ??
( 2006 Fiat Ducato )
We are considering having a tow bar fitted , if not , as we already have a Big Erde trailer.

We will also have to use that if we want to take the bikes , it seems now.
Although when we went to the IOW in May we had 2 bikes in the garage and 3 on the back and loads more gear ,dog trailer , food , clothes etc in the MH .
Totally oblivious to the fact that we must have been overweight.
You couldnt tell driving at all.
We dont use the MH abroad , BTW.
Thanks ,
Bev

by rights you should have 3 weights from the weigh bridge front axle rear axle and the whole van. i don't know how it works but sometimes the whole weight is less than the added total of the axles something to do with the principal of a 20k bike on a rack will add 40 or so to the axle
pivot points and leverage etc.

Thanks aba ,
It just so happens that when he drove the whole thing on , the total weight was the same as the front and rear added together.
1680KG Front
1940KG Rear
3620KG Total
Anyone know ?

it looks like you have had the weight upgrade but check what it says on the V5 as it should also say 3850kg
as you have a trailer it may be advisable to fit the tow bar to the van but this will add another 30-40kg on to your weight but then you could transfer some of the things into the trailer like the gennie, deck chairs even some clothes and maybe a gas bottle just to keep you under the 3850kg.
if the weights include a full tank of water then you could also empty that to a minimum until you get to site.

It says on the 3850KG on the V5 Ralph's just checked. :thumb:

Do you think that means that its already been done to the maximum?
Or as far as they can to keep it in the plg ( private light goods ) tax class?

We didn't weight it with any water in , as we dont travel with any as a rule . Just some bottled water in the fridge filling up when we arrive , where ever , on a weekend.
The plaque BTW is a CI one. Meaning that it was put on from New , the previous owner did not upgrade it. It would have been done in the factory , we think.

worth checking with this company.....SVtech

they specialise in upgrading and will only need a few details...tyre rating etc to tell you yes or no.

you may need air suspension fitting though.

Thanks pappa,
The air suspension is already fitted , its alko along with michelin XC camping tyres :thumb: The max load for each tyre is 1150KG if that helps at all.
It was part of the camping car package fitted from new.
Ralph was going to SVtech on Monday ( great minds:winky:) We just though someone may be able to advise on here , before hand.

At 3850kg it is PHG - anything over 3500kg is heavy goods, so cheaper road tax but dearer insurance. Possible licence problems.

Thanks wildman,
On our V5 doc it says PLG ( private light goods ) and the weight stated is 3850KG ? Is that wrong then ?
We can both drive up to 7.5 ton vehicles with our licenses.
Has anyone done the up grade to PHG and if so , was there a huge jump in their insurance?

if your over 3500kg you should be on PHG tax not PLG
you may be able to uprate again to 4100kg but that will come down to which alko axle you have on the rear and the ratings of the air suspension fitted
mine is plated at 5000kg but has 3 axles but restricted to a 6000kg train weight so i cant tow too much (not that i'd want to being only front wheel drive).
svtech will tell you if you can or not.
you can then work out which is going to be the most cost effective option the towbar or the upgrade:thumb:

Well we better get that sorted
I wonder why the V5 says PLG with the weights clearly stated on there then?
It was sold to us like that too from the original dealer , where the previous owner had bought it from.
Ralph will contact svtech and sort everything out Monday.
Thanks again everyone , for the input.

no need to pay SVtech just contact the DVLA and have the logbook altered, surrender your old tax disk and get a new one (cheaper)

weight

My motorhome is based on the 2006 Ducatto chassis and was upgraded by Autotrail from 3500kg to 3850kg and we were allways worried about weight. We were able to upgrade to 4100kg with out any problems by S V Tech in Leyland, its only a paper excercise and you can fill all the details in on there website
