We have just returned from the V Festival and got talking to a girl there who told us that she hires out her motorhome on weeks that she doesn't use it. She said that she uses motorhomeuk.co.uk and they take a cut and provide insurance cover. Have any funsters had any experience of doing this?

We say when the day comes when we can no longer afford to run our motorhome we will hire it out but until that day comes no way would I even consider hiring it out. We look after our " home from home" and we would get very upset if any damage was done to it by someone who couldnt care less. With regard to the company you mention, sorry I dont know of anyone that has used them.

We used to hire out our previous vehicle, got lots of money coming in but also loads of damage.

On one occasion it was returned with over £800's worth of damage, caused by an all male group going to the world cup in 2006. It required a complete new cooker amongst other items.

The vehicle was damaged in some way or other on every occasion it went out. Blocked Toilets, Broken Waste Drain Tap, Scrape along the near side wall, Broken window, Water Heater didn't work properly according to the hirer, (nothing wrong with it), Broke down once when the driver slipped it into reverse by mistake and the gear lever got stuck, 5th gear failed on a return from Scotland, Heavy breaking caused exceptional wear on the brake pads and discs.

When we purchased our replacement one last year we vowed that it will never be hired out, I would rather it stood idle for long periods than go through all the hastle.

Once got £700 per week hire from TV company to use as dressing room and for actors to have there hair, makeup done.
No one sleapt or cooked in it, it was only used as a dressing room.
No one drove it only me,they paid for me to deliver it and paid me to collect it when they finished with it plus £50 for a valet.
Good work if you can get it...pity its not regular.

Wow, Dave. Now THAT does sound promising. How did they find your name in the first place? Did you advertise it?

Nope...it was done through a friend in your neck of the woods, company called Easyrent, they hire out campers and it was at the time of one of the big festivals, all there campers were out on hire and Nick rang me to ask if I could help him out.
Turned into whats called a good little earner,he wanted me to do escorted tours at the time but I was to busy enjoying life at that moment in my life.::bigsmile:

It all depends on the company that hires your vehicle out, and how committed they are to you and your vehicle. The more proffessional the company, the better you will be looked after - and that does not necessarily mean a big company. The smaller ones often have more to loose.

As for letting a vehicle out to a large group of single sex - i cannot think of anyone who would do that!

It certainly isn't a money thing with us, we make sure that the hirers are genuine families, and the vehicles are safe as they can be. The security of the vehicle as far as damage goes is only as good as the handover - if you are just giving them the keys and a quick tour - then you will get damage!

You need a good step by step manual on board, a handover that shows them everything, and how to operate everything and even a driving lesson if required. I have sustained absolutely no damage to any vehicles in the last two years of hire. I did when I first started out - but that was because my handovers were rubbsih - i would forget to tell them how to use a bathroom door, so the mechanism would come back damaged.

As for things like brake pad wear - that to me is what is deemed acceptable wear and tear, even if they were heavy footed. You are earning £1000/month from your motorhome without one iota of risk to yourselves, and you worry about a £30 set of pads? There has to be some semblance of reality if you are hiring your vehicle.

The consumables will be consumed - at a faster or similar rate had you been driving, you may very well get an extra stonechip is scratch on the roof from a tree - but you are getting your motorhome for nothing effectively, a small price to pay really considering the income you can make and the free holidays you can enjoy!

The company I used was very effecient and say they are the largest in the UK.

They apologised for the all male group and said that it was not normally something they approve of but the group had slipped through the system.

My Instruction book was 53 pages long and covered every aspect of the vehicle, what it didn't cover is a group of drunken lads, at the world cup, climbing down from the overcab bed and treading on the drop down oven door which had been left open by someone else.

The handovers were never less than an 1hr long and covered all aspects including a test drive so the driver got used to the size of the vehicle.

As for various disposable parts, please, please tell me where I can get a set of pads and discs for a 2.8 JTD for £30, I need a new set for my current vehicle.

It's not just all the damage but the hastle that goes with it, even though most of the damage was paid for by the customer, it was left up to you to get it sorted out and if you have got another hiring within 3 or 4 days it can really put the pressure on you.

The money was good, I cannot argue with that, but was it worth all the hastle, I n my opinion NO.

I wasn't having a pop at you in particular, you find lots of companies take advantage of owners, give them little if any proper training and are interested only in profit - there should be no profit made as the costs are so high, you are just covering bookings when you are busy! It just gives the whole thing a bad name!

Our manuals are 6-10 pages. You will find people won't read long ones - something we found through experience. It needs to be something they can quickly flick through without effort. What we have done now is, have a 24hr call centre to handle more in depth details - which covers those that can't be bothered to read the manual!! It also covers repairs, so any damage is repaired on site immeadiately!

I was cheesed off this week, as one customer failed to tell me that the gas heater had failed - that would have been done on site if they had said! Never mind!

On no account should you have been left to repair yourself - paid for or not!

Pads are £30.04

Discs vary depending on what size/type you need.

300mm vented - £113.40 (probably these if a long/tag axle)
280mm vented - £75.96 (average size vehicle)
280mm Solid - £62.04 (Small basic c/van conversion)

Do check you discs first!

If you get stuck, I will have a set sent up.:thumb:

Apart from all the agro, damage and wear and tear, dont foget the bloody taxman will be after you for any income that you have got.

You should declare it on your tax return !

100% agreed! This is the problem I keep finding with people that have been on profit based agencies - they give them no advice or help with things like tax returns at all!

I must admit, a little while ago, one van alerted me that it was returning so I checked on the tracker - and it was outside a caravn accessory shop!:ROFLMAO:

I thought 'What have they broken?' - i do get wear items, I just put that down as use. get very little damage now - not sure if that is to do with being strict or sicilian! Maybe they have been watching too many movies, and think I will leave a horses head on their bed if they damage anything! :ROFLMAO:

Not even had one come back dirty this year:thumb:
