Gas Bottles in France advice. (1 Viewer)

Hi Guys,

I know this has been regularly discussed and I have read many threads about it but still have a couple of questions so advise please.

Please note.....I do not wish to fill cylinders at present time.

I am travelling in France / Spain for about 5 weeks in Oct and never having been abroad with M/H before I have deduced from threads that the cheapest way to get gas is buy French gas bottles. I can fit 2 of their 10kg gas bottles in my locker. This should be more than enough for my travels.

1- If I travel without any gas, is there a good place to buy propane gas bottles in Calais ?
2- Will they also sell whatever adaptor is needed or should I buy that here before I leave?

If you already have two gas bottles on your motorhome just do not worry.

We spent nine weeks in France in spring and worried a little about replacement bottles. It was completely un-necessary as we still had one and a half bottles Left upon our return

We were on 'The Italian Job' which, for us, lasted about 6weeks. We took a 6kg light and a standard 13kg (both Calor Propane) and as a back-up we took a 4.5kg(?) Camping Gaz with the appropriate pigtail.
We only used about half of the 13kg and nothing else - mind we ran the fridge on electric H/U mostly, but still I don't think I would concern myself too much. If it came to it you could always buy a French propane and the appropriate pigtail and just ditch one of the Calors if you had no room to carry it home.

I agree with the previous post ..

take two full Calor bottles which should be plenty , however, if push comes to shove you can always buy a Spanish bottle and regulator and leave the bottle there when you return

we went skiing earlier in the year in our MH in france and were wild camping most of the time with occasional aires if they were open! (most had no water due to freezing!) our cylinders were lasting 3 days !!! we soon found a way to use french gas - casino supermarkets (they're everywhere!) have lots of different size and types of cylinders n also supply gas hoses and regs to fit. BUT if you have the modern type of gas fitting in your locker and keep a couple of different hoses with different regs on the end in your locker you can swap to suit without paying the rather expensive cost of their regs, we use BP gas lite as i am a lone woman n can't lift the others anymore :Blush:, they have the push fit type clip on fitting without the need for a regulator as the reg is now fitted direct on the mh in the locker - thus you just swap cylinders as normal here in uk. the gas cylinders are about £10=(!!! n they only ask a 1euro deposit sooo you can leave them behind if you don't want to carry them) they are roughly between a 5 n 10kg cylinder size.

hope this helps - we couldnt have managed in minus 22 without the regular gas supply and replacement - n yes we were toasty in the MH - waking up to snow covered mountains was fab - missing it already!

The gas I use is Acti gas I purchase mine from Intermarche the supermarket or the garden centers.Gammvert there are many other outlets as it is widely used in northern to mid France..I did find I had a problem south..buy hey two 11kg lasts a long time this time of year...for a bottle of Propane the thread is a external left hand thread I am almost sure it is the same as the blue butane in England,(please check) you should have a bulkhead regulator mounted inside your gas locker so if you had a UK butane pigtail before you go, you should be set up without a lot of expense.

My Actigaz cost me 21 to 22 euros for a 11kg bottle depending on the outlet I purchase it from....the best part was I only paid 1 euro deposit, and as far as I know that is still the same deposit..... you may have to fill a form just the same in the UK.
I now have 6 bottles purchased over the last 5 years and paid a 1 euro deposit
The bottles can not be missed as the colour on the bottles are Bright Lime Green Propane ....and Bright Yellow Butane OOOOOOO

Something like this on Ebay is what you want one to convert you internal uk thread to a external french thread ( but please check this the correct one before buying because looking at the picture you can not tell

My opinion and it is only my opinion if stopping on Aires for 9 weeks this is not possible ..................and in October when the nights draw in and it gets cool in the evening and night.

Yes I agree if are stopping with relations in the south-ish of France getting 5 to 7 star luxury treatment, food cooked, free electric, and can not bare leave because it is so Mmmmmmmmm,( lovely home cooking) cozy, for about three to four weeks and the rest on electric hookups on campsites, Jacuzzis swimming pools ) Alan! you Bugger...or have I got this wrong if so I apologies

Take note of what Mel says he is the master of aires and wild camping.

We will be mostly on sites with electric hook-up. However we will be heading home in November and intending to travel back through Germany. As I expect it to be much colder then and may need some heating at night , didn't want to run short of gas.

We were in France for 4+ weeks early April this year, only had hook up 5 nights and we only used one and a half 6kg bottles. Why not take 1 UK bottle and buy one over there, then use and exchange the French one and use the UK for back up. Save the expense of buying two. I understand Camping Gaz is fairly easy to get in western Europe but I looked for adaptors and didn’t see any. You can buy empty Camping Gaz bottles at boot fairs for a few pounds and the adaptors are easily available here. Hope this helps.
