Hi
When we were travelling from almeria to catch the ferry at Santander last week it was lunchtime and we were on the motorway when my wife suddenly decided to get an item from the fridge , when returning to her seat we were overtaken by the Guardia Civil who spotted this and pulled us on to the next slip road. Two police approached and required our documents and then told us it was 110 euro fine for the seat belt offence and he also noticed that our dog was not tethered which was another 110 euro,s (this was turning into an expensive piece of cheese). Then our luck changed as he informed us that today no ticket and he would escort us back onto the motorway , but lessons learned
We knew this was illegal but you can sometimes get a bit lax after 6 months touring

Excellent bit of policing by the Guardia :thumb:

I doubt that you will offend on those items in future - job done!

Or could it be that it isn't illegal? Who said that a dog has to be thethered? Why can I go on a coach and wander around and go to the loo, even go to the bar on the larger coaches and get a coffee yet it would be illegal in a motorhome?

Would the dog thether have to be a three point harness and a BS approved harness or a lead wrapped around the table leg? where is the legislation?

I would happily pop to the loo or get a snack whilst on a suitable road, I am a great believer in "what will be will be" the front of the van could be "T" boned, taking out the cab, killing the driver whilst I am having a pee just as easily as me being injured whilst in the back without a seatbelt.

Just a thought

It's the Spanish law, dogs must be either in the boot or hatchback area with a proper metal grill or on the rear seat and fitted with a doggie seat belt / restraint.

Seat belts must be worn by everyone in the vehicle.

You got off lightly, particularly as it was the Guardia Civil, they are not renowned for their forgiving nature!

or should that be an EEC / EC approved harness.....British standards (BS) dont appear to be recognized anymore outside the uk.

:winky: Motorhomes don't have a boot:ROFLMAO:

! Is it me or is Spain turning daft? You see people defecating beside the roads, in towns and villages you see whole families riding on a single moped, their fishing industry are the scourge of the world and a disgrace, they ignore smoking bans, yet it seems they introduce laws such as these? They slowly murder bulls for a laugh so I find it hard that they would give a damn about dogs!

With respect do you know for fact that this is now the law in Spain? if so where and how did you verify it? or did you hear it somewhere? I mean no disrespect, but I do like to establish the source before I take anything as "read"

Thanks

A quick look at the UK Gov. FCO site will confirm Spanish driving laws.

It is compulsory for all in the car to wear seatbelts, both front and rear where fitted. The driver is responsible for any fines where passengers are not wearing an approved belt. Children under 12 years of age are not allowed in the front seats (unless they are over 150 cm or 4 ft. 9 ins, then they can unofficially get away with it. It is apparently to do with being secure in the safety belt). Also, if seated in the back, the belt must fit correctly, or a special “raising seat” must be fitted. Animals must be restrained when in the passenger section and not allowed to jump around.
My source is a son i have in the Guardia Civil:cry:

I see you've also visited the REAL Spain Eddie ... :roflmto:

Guardia Civil make up the rules depending on how much :wine: they've had at lunch time.. and best not to argue with them, no matter how absurd it sounds.

so how would you restrain a small yorkie, used to being on my lap in the front seat or on the floor? She would be terrified in a cage now as she was years ago when we sailed on the isle of wight ferry I had to keep my hand in the cage while we were on board to comfort her, she is very old now so can someone suggest something?

I regret to say that attitudes like this make me angry, because of the selfishness of the owner.

Any unrestrained object in a vehicle can cause damage at low speeds both to the object and to what ever it hits. Two vehicles hitting each other at 15 mph (collison speed 30 Mph) is enought to hurl a small dog through a windscreen. In a small car when sitting on the rear valance or seat, there is enough force to decapitate the driver or passenger.

That said, after an accident, nothing is worse than having to attend to the victims and having an unrestrained animal attempting to ""protect"" its owner in need of treatment, or having to deal with an animal in shock.

Maybe its a time to rethink prorities with regard to your pet care, rather than yourself.

Rant over,

My apologies if this upsets you, but it is nearer the truth of a situation than a rosy view of dog ownership.

Rgds

Hi
Just another warning regarding fishing from the beach in Spain . You have to have a license which is issued locally and only covers you in that region , its not national. Its also very difficult to obtain as you have to be sponsored/guaranteed by someone who has a current nif number. The fine is 100 euros or confiscate your tackle , this is being enforced in a number of areas. I believe public employees are being sent out to raise money due to the dire economic situation in Spain and we travellers are an easy target

It's all common sense and it was dealt with by guys with common sense.

The thread was to warn others and I think it was a good job well done.

Make up a bed in the toilet and the room darkened?

Personally I'd take a chance with a wee dog and just let it do as it always has. The walking about is obviously what drew their attention and they seem to have dealt with it pretty well IMHO.
