Hi Folks

On Sunday morning my pc was running fine. On Sunday night it started to act up. When I click on an icon it doesnt respond for ages, if I double click it acts faster.

Tried a few things on Sunday night, got fed up and turned it off. Turned it back on - on Monday morning and it was fine, so I gave myself a pat on the back.

Monday night is was back to acting the goat. As well as a very slow response to trying to open an application, when I move the mouse pointer across the screen the text on the page turns blue :whatthe:

I dont know what to try next, can anybody help please.

Jim

You need to look at the task manager to see what is running and taking all the processor utilisation. There are a whole load of legitimate (and not so legitmate) reasons for a computer to 'run slow'. It could be your operating system or anti-virus updating or scanning for example.

If all else fails, first thing to do is a system restore to a date before it started to play up. Look on windows help files on how to do it but back up any important stuff first and anything youve saved to the computer since the restore point date as it may be lost. :thumb:

Thanks Chaps. Iv'e tried all that and nothing helps. I dont think its a virus because after shutting it down on Sunday night, and then restarting it on Monday morning, it was fine all day before it went ape again on Monday night.

I'm starting to think about a destructive restore but its a pain reloading all of the software. I dont want to send emails with it whilst its as it is, just in case there is a virus there.

Run your virus program. Then if you have not got them try downloading Spybot Search and destroy and Adaware as these programs often find a virus the others miss ie:Norton Etc.Hope this helps.:Smile:

Thanks tick, Iv'e ran adaware but not Spybot. I'll try that tonght, think I'll try some registry key software as well. Its not something I normally like because it can take out registry keys that are valid.

next monday hopefully
Try this before you do the virus scans
Download and install without yahoo tool bar, Very safe to use, like you i don't like registry cleaners but this works great ,cleans out all Internet files and cleans register without any damage, back up register if you feel unsafe.
Been using it for years say once a week, like the motorhome needs a clean up every now and then

Hi Pappa, I have all of my auto downloads turned off. There set to "Inform Me" so that I can download only the ones I want.

What you describe can be difficult to solve

I would as previously suggested do a system restore Link Removed choose a date when everything was ok. This will not remove your programs etc ;but merely take you back to a particular time.

Try operating in safe mode see if the problem happens

Also check your pc temperatures could be overheating , download pcwizard 2009 will show you cpu/drives etc. if high then do some internal dust busting.

Also when it happens press Ctrl+Alt+ delete to bring up the task manager select processes and check the process that is using a lot of cpu and let us know. Also scroll down to system idle... p this should be around the 90+

Thanks Sinbad

Iv'e done a system restore and it doesn't help.

Will try safe mode

Now you mention it, Iv'e just moved the box from a place with poor access and noticed a
lot of dust around the vents, Iv'e been meaning to clean it but havent, so I'll try that.

Clogged with dust means high temeperature which could explain why it runs ok after it has been turned off for a while, its cooled down!!

Will also check the system idle. I always seem to have a rake of processes running but I'm never sure what to stop because I'm never sure what all of them are. I'll check that again.

Cheers

Hi Wireman, As it happens the mouse has been in need of a good clean for a while. I'll take one home from work with me and try that. Blimey my machine sounds like a train wreck dun it.

Sounds like it may be a typical GPU or CPU Overheat issue. Is the mouse/cursor freezing?

Check all the fans are working and clear of dust ....as are all the vents.Graphics cards are a typical culprit.

Check CPU Temp in Bios after running for a while.

Run perfmon from Start/Run to see where the issue might lie if not mechanical.

Check Memory usage and cpu.

Hope you get it sorted.

Malwarebytes is good for finding any rogue spyware etc.

We all have our favourite clean up utilities. Mine is www.tuneuputilities.com
It is free for 30 days then you either pay or ditch it. Suggest trying it and if it works, run it 1ce week for a month.
When did you last do a disk defrag?
Check your startup programs...

My money is on Tune-Up. Literally - I keep buying it!

My initial suggestion is to do a defrag to tidy up your hard drive - it's a good idea to do this every so often to keep it in good 'condition'. Next, as has been said, check what's running when it goes slow - also check how much RAM is showing to see if one of the sticks has died - this can have a major effect on performance.
