When turning left at an angled junction in a "c" class left hand drive, I find I cannot see the oncoming traffic to the right due to the angle and side of the rig.

Even unbuckling the seat belt which I know is not legal, I cannot see and have to rely on the car turning right alongside me to pull out first.

It's ok when there's someone in the passenger seat but a no-no if on my own....

I have installed a rear camera which is a god-send and was thinking of installing a camera on the right hand side, switched to the same monitor, for these instances.

Is this legal?

What about a wide angle mirror as used on Jap 4X4 and trucks. It is usually positioned at the far end of the bonnet on the drivers and angled toward the driver.

Cheers Bigfoot....

Don't know whether I have the heart to drill the bodywork....

Any pics of one or where can I get one please?

Steve.

Do you have any mirrors on the bonnet or are they all on the doors? If the answer is yes,try a mirror from the scrap yard jury rigged to a magnet to find out if it works. You could probably rig up a mirror on a clamp and attach it to the bonnet lip.
Expeimenting with various layouts may be better.
Also try an Japanese parts specialist, Jap MPVS and 4X4s have a tail gate mirror which is quite a wide angle(used for reversing) You may be able to get one of these on a clamp.

I fitted one within a week of having mine, mainly to get in and out of my narrow gateway, its positioned over the top right of the RV looking down on the front right bumper/windscreen area, would be lost without it. Really its a case of using a slightly different driving technique as well, dont go right to the end of a junction so you can have a better angle to the traffic from the right. The worst junctions are those with very short slip roads onto Dual carriageways. It does take practice I've been driving left Hookers for about 6 years. Its also useful to have a wider convex lens as an extra mirror on the right side

So glad it isn't just me that has this problem. I have started stopping at the left hand turn more-or-less at right angles rather than turning into the bend. It could be solved easily if there was a button on the dash that made it that we could turn the righthand wing mirror to an angle swiftly, like you can alter some car mirrors.

Cheers All.

I am going to look at a few options here.

Unfortunately the problem manifested itself yesterday when trying to get across a very busy coastal route and the spacing from both ways was perfect for not getting out...

In the end I had to enter the junction at an angle as I had decided the only way I was going to get across was to turn left,go across to the right turn to the left of me and do a turn into there......

That B+++++ "Lincolnshire Gap! as I call it tends to stretch out queues of traffic and makes crossing roads VERY difficult.

Have you tried 'Nosing'? Usually you will see truckers and bus drivers doing this, It does have the effect of causing traffic to slow down, especially if you are BIG!
We have an awful junction near us,which is from an A-road onto the motorway, its difficult even with a right hooker. After 30 years they are at last doing something about it.
Ona similar junction, further down, they put traffic lights, unfortunately it was computer designed by a non-driver and took 5 years to get it right!

I agree with the moving mirror idea, I expect the newer models have them ?

It is available on new BMWs. So must be legal, and why not.

But if you pull out having missed something with your camera, a biker probably, small target, then you are still in deep poo.

may be a bit too small but im thinking of a stick-on interior mirror as used by police and driving instructors.

top right of screen and angled to see up the right lane.

you would, of course, need a similar approach angle at all juctions and great care must be taken due to restricted field of view.

easily removed and no drilling.

Thanks,

Unfortunately my habitation door/window is too far back.

And no other windows that far forward...

Might have to try a periscope...

Hi

We have cameras all round plus an extra camera dedicated to looking right just to cover turning left or right. There is one down each side to cover cars over/under taking and also the reversing camera.

The one facing right shares a monitor with the right hand side camera, it is fitted inside mounted to the dash. This gives coverage from forward of the front of the vehicle to just to the rear of the habitation door. The dash board looks like the starship enterprise with 3 monitors but they do the job. The one with 2 cameras attached auto switches between the 2 cameras or you can manually switch to one or the other.

We also pull up square to the junction/roundabout to give the best angle of attack. I check the camera, then through all the available windows, I check the camera again and then manoeuvre.

We also just to cover any blind spots have the stick on round fish eye mirrors attached to the main mirrors.

If we are not toading and Tricia is following in the car we use walkie talkies as well to make sure it is clear.

We try to cover any eventuality to keep us safe.

Hi John

I posted this problem last year but didnt realy get a solution. I had this problem again yesterday, came off the M6 and up the slip road. The junction with the roundabout is angled and there's no way I can see, you are almost trying to see behind you.

I was ok yeserday because I had SWMBO in front of me in the car. She edged out and I followed on her tail.

The best way that I can see is to have a mirror attached to the underneath of the overcab. I'm still thing about it.

Thats the best way Terry but there are some junctions that due to the configuration/geometry/width of road etc, its impossible. :whatthe:

SWMBO went missing in the car yesterday in Coventry so I spent an hour in a laybye waiting for her. I spent most of that hour practicing getting out of the drivers seat and standing and leaning over to the right so that I could see. I got pretty good at it to. :Eeek:

Thanks all....

I would really like to solve this one.

I was forced to enter the junction at an angle...as there was a vehicle to my right....

Had a few problems on roundabouts where some of the roads enter at an angle...

Impossible to enter square on...

Feels so dangerous as you are relying on following another motorist out of the junction with somewhat less acceleration....

Still looking at the camera option...

Fresnel Lens

Just put a Fresnel Lens in the side window - job done. Much easier than mirrors or cameras. The Kent police issue them to continental truck drivers to reduce the number of accidents they have in the UK.

I have been driving our left hooker for six years and have always relied on SWMBO. When I have had to drive solo then I have to remember to take up some interesting angles at road junctions. But then a year ago a friend (thanks Keith) got me a fresnel lens and once I got used to the view - Wow.

OK Steve I get the idea :thumb: but I still think you should indicate pulling across both lanes until you can see, but if a lens or camera option works for you fine :thumb::ROFLMAO:

The non-technical way is to us a co-driver, which is how we double check on the Continent. Bit difficult if she's already flying escort, but it might be an excuse to call a friend...

This certainly is surely be the way for most people who aren't lucky enough to take
two vehicles around, Never overlook the bleedin' obvious.

The problem that I had on Sunday had nothing to do with me being lucky enough to take a second vehicle. I was dropping my mh off in the Midlands and driving back home in the car with my wife, who was not "Flying Escort", Hence two vehicle were required.

I hadn't overlooked the bleedin obvious which is why my wife got the car in front of me and exited the junction slowly with me behind her as in a "train". Good forward planning.

Now had I been on the continent there wouldnt have been a poblem because I can see very easily to my left, me being a LHD.

Have you tried doing the opposite to getting square to the junction? Where we live there are many sharp junctions, which are awkward even with a small panel van i used to own. One trick I found was to pull up at a sharp angle as possible and look back down the road in the wing mirror. Just an idea.

Hi Gaz,

I use the technique all the time and it works well. On most occasions I can see through the side window as suggested earlier. Its few and far between that you absolutley can not see to the right. Ive only had to do it once when I crawled very slowly out of a blind junction without being able to see. Everything was ok but I had a sore bum after it.
