I have noticed that there is a lot of wasted space in the back of the Truck bed when hitched up with 5er, I am in the process of having a box fabricated out of aluminum with a folding lockable lid to both keep the elements out and to keep anything stored secure, I am going to have it made so that it will fasted down to the rails in the floor section thereby making it a removable extra, I have contacted the firm that has agreed to manufacture but as yet I have no idea of the price.

Would anyone else be interested as and when I can get a price if it is reasonable ?, The reason I ask is that it always works out cheaper if more than one is wanted.

I estimate the dimensions to be in the region of 54" (137 cm) X 24" (61 cm) X 12" (30 cm) L X W X H so as you can see it will be a handy size and will store quite a bit of stuff.

It will also be handy for storing shopping etc in when actually camped and you have gone to town etc.

Les,
I am in the process of doing exactly the same thing, so very interested. Do you have a hard cover for the back of your Nav when not towing and will the lock be below the top of the box? As anything much above will be a problem with the cover. Also what guge Ali?

Before you go ordering one custom made have a look at ebay.com in the USA.

They are very very common over the pond and can be picked up pretty cheaply. Even if it costs £50-80 to get it shipped it may well be cheaper and have better features than one made as a one off over here.

I found this with a very quick look :thumb:

Hi JK yes it will be below the cover as it will also need to be to be able to hitch/unhitch with it in situ.

It will fit inside the back door width ways to enable it to be fitted/removed whilst hitched if required and it will also fit between the back door when closed and the front of the hitch and come just below the hitch plate to allow the king pin entry and access to the plate.

Hi Dazzer yes I had a look on ebay but they all seem to be too wide as the box would also need to have enough room to access the plugs for the trailer.

As for the guage I am going to go with the advice of the manufacturer on that as they do quite a lot of specialist stuff, You can find them at www.allyfab.co.uk

Hi Les
Your post reminded me I was lookin last year at trying to design a lockable box (boxes?) that fitted round the sides & back of the hitch, fitting over the wheel arches to make the most of this space.

I came to the conclusion I did not have the necessary skills required so did not take it any further.

I belive these are available for US pickups but have not found anything for our Navara.
If anybody has any suggestions on how to proceed with this idea I would be very interested.

I would be interested in your box, subject to cost & weight.

Regards - Chas

Because we travel so far and I think that external storage is minimal for such as Chairs Barbys, Awning mat so on and so on I am going to fit different sorts of external storage so that I will have ample room.

I have designed brackets for the rear bumper and am changing the rear lights to allow the fitting of a rear box which will be 100 cm w X 70 cm H X 53 cm deep, this will fit at the side of the spare wheel, I also have a roof box on the Navara which will accept my tri fold bed cover for the Navara and also other stuff like fold up bike and bits and bobs, These along with the box in the bed that I am going to have will give me ample room for stuff without packing the Front 5er box to bursting, My idea is that the suff we use all the time chairs, table, cables, water hose etc will be easy to get out without having to empty it, Stuff like awning carpet which a lot of sites demand in Europe can go in the rear Box with Clothes line and stand and stuff that is not in constant use, This should also allow me to take my suitcase generator for when we are wild camping and be able to leave stuff locked away in safety.

I have contacted a company re the box for the truck bed and they are going to give me a price on Monday, They make pick up boxes for many Trucks so they should know how to best make them, It will be made out of Checquer plate aluminium.

Les,
Have you any idea how much the KL will weigh? I'm close to, perhaps over, my rated 3.6 T and don't have half the things you have or plan to have.
I think you have the self adjustment system as well?

Hi Jack, Yes I have the self leveling system but the difference in weight is very little as they replace the standard jacks with virtually the same stuff but heavier duty, The difference is around 30 lb or 13 kg.
I am not sure where you get the 3.6 T from, my gross train weight is 6.5 T which will allow me 1 tonne + in cargo, what I have added in storage weight is around 17 kg (Without the bed box), My idea is not to carry more weight but to have it distributed evenly thereby making it easier to handle and have easier access to.

Even if you dont get your boxes from these guys some of the ideas are fantastic.:thumb:

I love the rear mounted box that lets you put a 5er over the top of it!!!::bigsmile:

I have sent an email, But it is not the cost of shipping it is the duties that have to be paid, I recently purchased an item from states cost £34 shipping £9, Duty to be paid £19 plus handling of £3, I hate to think what it would be on that but we will see.

Well I had a shock yesterday and again today Box would cost (Cheapest quote) £420 + VAT, So it is naturally a no go, So I am ordering from states and even with taxes etc it would be cheaper.

Les,
Shipping from the American site is $600+, plus Duty?. BTW hooking / de hooking at an angle, which I have done on more than one occaision, will be a problem with these as well. Might just go for my 2 x idividual boxes.

Yeah I thought about that so I have gone for the bottom one I have contacted a couple of companies that ship from states and can get it for around $100 which is still a lot cheaper and will tick all the boxes.
