breakdown cover if they would come out to me to change a flat tyre they said they would
lift me if i had a flat wheel but did not know if they would change a flat tyre.

So has anyone on the forum got Caravan Guard insurance and if so have you used

We used the RAC last time it shed a tyre.

Very helpful they were too.

Make sure they are aware of the size of the rig and tyre when you make the call though....

If the 'phone line goes dead.....you know they may have a problem....

Tricky question this tyre changing. I spent a long time last year trying to obtain written confirmation of the inclusive tyre changing deal, but not many would commit.
After a lengthy trawl I found Saga, who are owned by the AA, included this service in with the policy. This was odd as the AA direct would only cover me if I took out a commercial policy, nothing more strange than insurance companies.

Hi,

The way I understand the situation if you breakdown for what ever reason if you can't fix it yourself for any reason then your breakdown company will respond unless it is specifically excluded, like the near you house type situation, as this is not just focused on tyres it can also be bulbs some of them you need to be a mechanic to replace and in certain countries it is illegal to travel with a blown bulb.

My interpretation of can't fix it yourself is very wide as it really depends upon so many things, e.g on a motorway I don't think you are allowed to repair/change a wheel etc on the hard shoulder, or if your own level of mobility impairs you to do certain actions, your own physical strength may preclude you, your mechanical knowledge precludes you, the list goes on and on, so I expect all breakdown companies to respond if you can't fix it yourself.

There is a huge difference between changing a "tyre" and changing a "wheel"
I would expect all breakdown chaps to change a wheel, and very very few to change tyre, specialist equipment is reqd for tyre changing that is not normally carried by breakdown companies
A lot of garages don't change tyres for that very reason, we do, but only as a workshop option, not mobile or roadside
Geo
When I say specialist equipment I know it's only a couple of bars and a sledge hammer, possibly a bead breaker none of which are normally carried by mechanics

Hi, I agree with Geo, but I assumed perhaps wrongly that "Tyre Changing" was in relationship to taking off the punctured wheel and tyre and replacing it with the Spare wheel and tyre.

Its also worth noting that some breakdown companies charge extra if you don't carry a spare wheel, as I believe some later vehicles don't, so that's worth checking in the small print.

most, if not all, b/d companies state in the rules you must have a servicable spare wheel.

you may also find the regular b/d vans only carry a 2 or 3ton trolley jack so if you have an RV and you dont tell them the weight they cant be expected to change a wheel.

2nd year
also i think it would be very difficult for the AA and the likes to change a tyre as they would not be able to balance it, you would need to employ someone like ATS that do roadside as they have all equipment within there vehicles

I’ve just checked my RAC breakdown policy and from my reading tyre puncture assistance is excluded. I assume Fiat assist have the same policy.
What then happens if say you’re in France without a spare tyre is it an ATS rather than RAC call out that’s needed?
More importantly do you think ATS France would carry the required tyre in stock locally or are you likely to have to wait a day or so?

Hi,

I don't know what level of cover you have with the RAC but it does appear they do cover wheel changing in the UK can't find specific answers about European cover, they also make reference to not having a spare, here's a direct extract and the link to the page: Link Removed

Extract from link above
Your question

Will you change my wheel/tyre?
Your answer

Your RAC Membership will cover you in the event that you need to change a wheel, if you have a working serviceable spare in the vehicle and you have any wheel locking nuts needed to change it and a serviceable key to unlock them. If you don't have either of these, we may make a surcharge.

If you do not have a spare but have a self-repair puncture repair kit or chemical tyre inflation canister, we will use these first in order to make a temporary repair until we tow you to a nearby garage.

Hope that helps.
