Yes, I paid a guy £250 to use one on my van.

The important thing is he knew he had good software ( from Germany I think ) and he knew it would work. He downloaded and stored the original map and then flashed a better one - also tried and tested from Germany.

So there is the krunch. Where do you get a proven map from ?

You've got big balls if you are prepared to tinker yourself - "I'll just increase that a bit" "GREAT". "I wonder if it will take a bit more" "OHhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh Shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit".

Looks interesting but.........I wouldn't, and I do 'tinker'

For (aledgedly) all post '96 vehicles you can get ODB2 code readers which is exactly what I've got, purely diagnostic, well apart from clearing codes, doesn't bugger with anything just tells what's up.

We reflash and upgrade chips all the time.In a vehicle ECU or on another bit of electrical equipment the thing to remember is ALWAYS make sure you have a good READABLE backup of the original first.

Belts and braces..... Make at Least 2 backups on different media. That way it can always....we hope...be restored back if it doesn't work or the new image is corrupt.

As Geo Says....I'd leave vehicle remapping to the "experts"

But how do we distinguish between those who really are knowledgeable and those who claim to be so?

The upgrade experts range from those with "powerful magnets", those with tiny "add-on boxes" to those who do a re-map. The recent show at the NEC turned up a selection of them.

Of all these experts how many have fully tested the remaps on every type of engine? By testing I mean power, consumption, long term usage etc - not a 10 minute drive up the road.

A modern, very expensive engine can be easily remapped and easily destroyed.

.

Ask them what there using and ask them for evidence of the Map. I spent over an hour chatting with Jason who came to do mine about the company that made the remap.

Firstly, in answer to Doug, Like Bryan I saw one used on my last Van. I have also used many on motorbikes in a similar vain.

So simply put, I have re-maps done that have been written by experts, whom know what they are doing.
I can;t understand what you want to do with it Doug? are you going to fill us in? Are you preparing your van for racing in the next top gear series? or are you actually going to write your own map? that would be cool to do it and would love to see the results.
I wont be doing mine though:winky:
