Hello, not sure if this is the right room to post this, sorry if it isnt.

About 10 days ago i receiced an email from someone who said he was interested in buying my mh, he had seen it in MHF classified.
Though i was contacted by email i was not contacted by MHF pm.

When i replied to his email i asked him if he was a member of MHF, he said that he wasn't but a freind who was a member had told him about it for sale in classified,he hasn't as yet disclossed the members name.

Today i received another email saying that he was a red cross worker helping out in Hiati and would be working there for the forseeable future.
Due to power breakdown he was not able to make outgoing phone calls but left me a mobile number of the group he is working for (i intend contacting the local police today to see if they're interested in phoning him) and would i ring him as he wanted to pay a deposit on my mh before he sent his agent to pay the remainder and collect the mh.

I have replied to the new email as thus -

"Hello again,

why would you want to buy my mh if you are stuck in Hiati ?

why would you buy my mh without seeing it first ?

why can't you buy or borrow a mobile phone so that you can ring me ?

but most of all -

WHY DO YOU THINK I AM SUCH A F***ING MUG THAT I WOULD SEND YOU MY BANK DETAILS ?

NOW F*** OFF AND DO SOME WORK TO EARN YOUR MONEY INSTEAD OF TRYING TO SCAM INNOCENT PEOPLE?, YOU F***ING SEWER RAT.

MAY THE FLEAS OF A THOUSAND CAMALS INFEST YOUR A**EHOLE.

GOODBYE AND GOOD RIDDANCE."

I have about 6 days ago pm'd Jim asking if non members are able to get our email addys from this site but i'm yet to receive his reply, (this is by no means a dig at Jim as i know he is a very busy man and has had major probs with this site over the weekend, Big Thanks for getting us up + running Jim) i am asking now if any of you members can tell me is it possible for our email addys to be purchased buy anyone who wishes to get them regardless of who they are ?.

If it is possible to get our email from this site without first being contacted by pm on here, WHY is it possible ?

So sorry for the rant but my blood is boiling at the moment.

I think its a standard function of forums. Usually its an option when joining, whether to have your email address shown or not

Thought I would be nosey and look into this a little further.

So, I logged off and came back on to motorhome fun as a guest without logging in.

It appears guests can access anything a poster puts on the classified ads, so for example if you have included a telephone number or posted a reply with personal information included, all this information appears to be able to be accessed by anybody.

So please funsters, just be extra careful xxxxxxx

I use to love getting the scam emails... you can keep them going for ages...

For example...

"I tried ringing your phone but it wasn't switched on... can you give me another number?"

"Why don't we speed this up a bit... send me your bank details and I will arrange the necessary transfer of funds..."

"Try phoning me on this free-phone number..."

Then, when they have given up on you, you then turn the tables on them and start inundating them with requests...

Ok... it won't do much good but it gives me pleasure... and yes, I do agree folks, sometimes I do have too much time on my hands... :winky:

I have contacted the police, they are very interested + have passed the persons email addy + the so called work groups mobile number to the fraud squad + will ring me with the (if any) result.

If anyone else gets any scam emails the police welcome any phone calls to them.

When someone contacts the advertiser, the message is sent to your fun registered email the email address is not shown to anyone. This is done through an internal email function, You see their email address but they do not get to see yours

We do not share your email address with anyone.
However If you respond to that person, of course they can see your email.

No visitor or registered funster can see your email address, via the classified or any other part of the site:Smile:

1 kind member has just tried contacting me through this site, i got an email from them but it did not disclose their email addy and i also got a msg from MHF from the same person.
This did not happen to the offending email i received, i had no pm from MHF and the email gave his email addy.

Thanks again.

Just a word of warning to those not clever enough to do something about spam emails.

I remember a member of this or the other forum replying to a spam email with abuse. He then had to deal with 10,000's of spam emails.

I know it is a problem being worried about these things, but I think reporting and then backing off is the best way.

Alternatively if you are clever enough to deal with these problems then obviously it does not matter.

Just over a year ago I was dealing with a couple of thousand spam emails every day. It was taking about 2 hours each day to sort them out  Thank goodness my provider found a better method of dealing with them off site. I was using an off site spam catcher prior to that but it was still taking 2 hours to go through and identify the good emails it had caught.

Best regards

Chris

I too have now disabled the VCARD feature, I had no idea that this would have been enabled and have to be disabled. I would have thought that this type of feature would have had to have been chosen in the first place, i.e. enabled by choice rather than disabled.
Thanks Hildweller,

Bank Details

As I understand it, if they want to pay money into your account all they need is the information which is printed on every cheque. Name, Sort Code, and Account number. Possibly also a reference number depending on which type of account you have, you would have to ask your bank if they need a reference number for paying in by bank transfer, some do some don't. This is not enough information to draw money out. Otherwise everyone who saw a cheque from you would be able to empty your account.

The scams only happen when they ask you to send them money to facilitate things. Or want to put dirty money (possibly drug money or stolen money) into your account and transfer it to them - money laundering.

I can see no problem in just giving the info which is printed on your cheques, plus the reference number which identifies your account to the bank, if necessary..

That is true if they are in the UK, but outside they would also need the IBAN and the BIC info

I get quite a lot of international payments made like this .. what IS interesting is that when I first started up doing international stuff some 10 years ago I was extremely wary of giving out bank details
Had a meeting with my Bank advisor and looked for reassurance that even with all the info, no one could do anything except give me lolly ..

After a detailed chat I was still not terribly sure, so he had drafted a doc saying, more or less, that he personally as a rep of the bank blah blah had authorised the details to be given out until such time as the bank deemed it unwise to do so.
He has it on file at the bank and I have a copy..and yes, I do still check with him on occasion

Sooooooooooooooooo

Given that info what on earth do the ba^^ard scammers do with the details once they have them ! ?

Yes, I recall reading about the exact same scam, it might have been on MHFun or maybe it was on the other one :winky:

Either way it's a definite scam and while I applaud your reply I doubt if it will stop these things from occuring I agree with everything you called them BTW ::bigsmile:

I guess I'm fortunate because I will never use E-bay or advertise on the net I would rather the item stayed in my workshop unsold or I will give it to a charity.

Don't agree JJ, this is an excellant service you are providing and at the very least it might make the scammer feel a little bit intiminated.

So keep on doing it, not a waste of time in my view
