Dear forumers

My generator happened to fail just over X-mas - and I desperately need it (in order to load the batteries/in order to use the heater fan) since I am a full timer. It's bloody cold over here on the continent! It's actually the starter that broke. As for the model: It's a Generac EG640 (same as Endress ES650), for both the starter and the generator, see pictures below.

I contacted:

- Generac International, Winsford, Cheshire (phone +44 1606 862182). They don't have the part, they directed me to

- Genplus Systems Ltd, Whitby, N. Yorkshire (phone +44 1947829810). They are closed until January 1

- Generac in Wisconsin/USA. They don't know the model…

- Endresss (Germany). They are closed until January 4

==> Therefore: Anybody could help me out with such a starter by mailing it to me? Any other advice? Please contact me via mail. Thanks very much.

Looks like a bog standard pull starter, whats broken on it,the spring, the cord or what.
I would imagine any tool hire or garden machiery shop would be able to fix somthing up for you.

It's the spring that jumped out, additionally, a tiny plastic part broke. I don't imagine that this can be repaired.

That pullstart looks very familiar, there are loads of small engine makers that use the same parts, lawnmowers, and the like.
If it were me I would be looking for a garden machinery shop,a good one should be able to fix you up.
Generater makers are like most other manufactures, they use standard off the shelf parts where possible to keep down costs.

No idea which area of 'the continent' you are in (it's a big place :winky:) but i'm assuming the north?

Considering the current climate extremes and time of year why not try finding somewhere to hire a 'genny' as a temporary measure until Christmas/New year season is over with and more businesses are back to normal?

I'm not that far from Winsford so feel free to flag up if you need more help. As Snowbird says, that part looks common to many motor mowers.

l have had a similar thing happen to me with a Honda genny, and l removed the cord from the starter dog and wound it directly around the starter shaft. A few strong pulls and it worked! until l could get a new starter and cord component. I have even used a longer piece of rope in these situations. Good luck!

By the way. Make sure the cord or rope isn't fixed to the starter shaft, just wound around it. So the cord is free at the end of the pull.

Just found a bit more 'info' for you.

Paste this number into eBay 260462088522

Thats a trader specialising in Generac spares and though the area given on the ad is Stoke-on-Trent, the phone number is Crewe, Cheshire.

The other worth a look at is 120510006992 which is someone selling a Generac EG650 genny. Still has three days left to run on the auction. If you want to bid for it I can easily pick it up for you.

Most recoil starters have a back up system, if you remove the recoil starter housing there is usualy a pully to with two grooves in the pulley flange, all you need is a cord with a knot at one end and you should be able to start it.

Loads of people assemble generators but many use off the shelf engines and it's possible the engine is quite common. Does it have any ID or label that would help you track a part down from the engine manufacturer?
As has been suggested already I would try garden/mower mechanic because most of these pull starters work the same way and any with similar dimensions would probably work. My mower has started for years using an old pull assembly from a scrap mower that I self tap screwed to the cover as an emergency temporary repair.

Your response was overwhelming! Thanks very much for taking me that seriousely. Here is some feed back:

...If it were me I would be looking for a garden machinery shop,a good one should be able to fix you up...

I found a garage where they tried to do exactly this. Three (3!) guys worked on it, they finally were able to wind up the spring and to put it back into the casing. I put the starter back up into the generator, it would start once, then failed again. I'll have to go back and see these friendly guys again tomorrow.

No idea which area of 'the continent' you are in (it's a big place :winky:) but i'm assuming the north?... Considering the current climate extremes and time of year why not try finding somewhere to hire a 'genny' as a temporary measure..
I'm not that far from Winsford so feel free to flag up if you need more help...

Your offer is extremely friendly. I however doubt if you would be able to "deliver" a rental genny to my place. I'm in Eastern France, just around the corner from Northern Switzerland.

l have had a similar thing happen to me with a Honda genny, and l removed the cord from the starter dog and wound it directly around the starter shaft. A few strong pulls and it worked!...

I can't get to the starter shaft without removing the generator casing completely. Letting it run that "naked" wouldn't be good as it rained, not to speak about the noise it then makes.

...Paste this number into eBay 260462088522...Thats a trader specialising in Generac spares

The other worth a look at is 120510006992 which is someone selling a Generac EG650...

Yeap, I already sent this trader (MW Power Systems, Stoke on Trent) an e-mail

Good idea, still, considering that I am on the continent, I would probably have some difficulty with the delivery.

... if you remove the recoil starter housing there is usualy a pully to with two grooves in the pulley flange, all you need is a cord with a knot at one end and you should be able to start it...

As I said above, I would have to remove the casing to do this. I can't/don't want let run my genny in such a condition.

...

I had the same idea. But unfortunately, I wasn't able to discover an ID, a part number or anything.

As said above, I'll give the guys from the garage another chance to fix the starter. Still, to be on the save side, it wouldn't be bad to have a spare starter. I'll keep you posted about my tomorrow's exercise

Thanks for the friendly offer. I checked planetfrance.com (planetfrance.fr does not exist), I however don't understand what they are doing/what they could do for me. Can you please get into contact with me via PM in order to explain? Thanks.

Yes I wasn't intending delivering a rental genny from the UK to you! Just an idea for you to try renting one there! Ex wife lives in Bern but doubt she'd be any help!

I'm only a 20 min drive from Stoke but knowing how things are here in the UK over Christmas, I doubt that place will be open until after New Year.

Planetgens idea seems to be the best. Got to be worth a try at least.

Just hate the idea of you sitting there with icicles hanging out of yer nose!

Hi Planetgen, I now understand - you're working for the same company as the one in Britanny. The French would say: Génial  Thanks for the advice, I've already sent a web-mail to your brothers in spirit, I hope to get an answer quickly.

I thought, too, that you were not intending to deliver a rental genny from the UK to France
 It's very friendly of you not wanting me to hang out with icicles on my nose. Really considerate, thanks!

Problem (technically) solved

As promised last night, here is my feed back: I went back to the garage, they guys there tightened the spring of the pull starter, I put the device back on - which led to the desired result: I can start my genny again. Is there a word that describes how happy I am about this?

I'm pretty sure that the spare pull starter that I'm still looking for will be found soon, too.

All of this of course because of your very much appreciated help. Therefore and again: :thanks: very much!
