Hi all, I am thinking of replacing the beast with a Hymer, probably quite an old one, so what fuel consumption can I expect from which model. Is turbo on a merc engine more economical or not, which gives best manual or automatic gearbox. Looking at 1980's -95ish vans so come on please Share your experiences. Also not looking for speed but which models will do the occasional tow without problems on hills.

According to most of the Hymer owners I speak to
you can look forward to between 100 to 150 miles per gallon:ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

Heck where have I been going wrong? :whatthe: I only get between 18 & 25 mpg on my 1994 4600kg Merc 410d diesel 2.9 litre automatic Hymer S670. :ROFLMAO:

Although I have never towed with it I have heard of someone towing a large boat with a similar model fitted with a turbo no problem. Personally I feel no need to have a turbo fitted but I do have to accept 20 mph maximum speed up steep hills.

As you are looking to go below 3500kg you may find the Fiat better than the 310 merc chassis that tend to roll about a bit I understand.

well I have one of the last 2.8idTD fiats , 6 metre 584 , and to my amazement it does 30mpg the way i drive , which is 90Km/h like the trucks
has enough oomph for the occasional towing job , and apart from steep hills climbs at 80/90 Km/h in 5th

you need to carry a hammer in case something goes wrong

point is , I think you will find this engine from the mid 90's onwards

I used to have a 2005 B774, 4.5 T with 2.8 JTD Fiat engine, returned 26 mpg on a run after chipping it, using it just tottering about I got 18 mpg at tops.

My Hymer B694 Tag axle is doing about 30 MPG , The engine has been chipped and has a TB Turbo update and a larger Turbo Radiator, it obviously depends on how you drive, I am no boy racer and 60 mph is fine for me .[ average ]::bigsmile:::bigsmile:::bigsmile:

My 1999 2.8 fiat turbo diesel B584 consumption changes according to how it is driven. At home used around town and driven occasionally at 70 mph on the A38 it returns 24.5 MPG. When touring on the continent it returns 30 to 31 MPG. This includes some fast driving. I think the main cause of the difference is the "stop start" on our congested roads.

I use a cusum chart which shows exactly when the fuel consumption changes. A trip across the channel improves things instantly.
