Firstly, I would like to say thanks to all who sent me birthday wishes.

It is great to see someone acting like a baby again, just like being back in the Police.

Anyhoo...Have a 5.5T Tag Axle going to Italy and Sicily for the winter. I know from research that I am required to carry them, but the question is.....how many?
Front wheel drive, with most of the weight on the back (n)

Sorry if I am being a bit thick, and I promise not to cry if someone takes the p##s.

Thanks for replying so quickly. That makes complete sense, but we know what European legislation is like.
I can now go shopping for a nice pair of heavy duty chains, and not 3 pairs made of tin foil.

Maybe good idea to have another set on the rear as need them going up hill on front drive axle but remember You also have to go down hills as well and grip is very important as well as you say all the Weight on the back so you may get in trouble side sliding but up to you. I have 2 sets and chain up all axles to be as safe as possible :) but everyone has there own thoughts but I would rather be safe than sorry and my sets are both top of the range.

since 2014!
I have used chains many times when I was living in Germany. You need them on all wheels, if you want to remain in control!

The regulations in Germany require you to have winter tyres fitted to all wheels during the worst part of the winter for the same reason.

Front wheel drive on a lightish car, you might get away with. I would not try it in Eric, for fear of the back ruling the front, so to speak!!

If you can plan an alternative route at low level always less chance of snow
However as you know
no one can guarantee the weather

5.5 tonnes is a big vehicle if you can afford the expense I would fit winter tyres all round the risk is the front wheels grip with chains and the rear wheels lose grip and try to overtake the front.

The only reason I am seriously looking at chains is to cover my arse legally ..
I doubt VERY much I would be bothered to fit them though.. I guess donkeys years of long distance dispatch work not only hardened my bum but my my resolve too.. If it gets that bad we will stop, get the kettle on and settle down for a few days !

Thats why I always have 2 sets of chains so rear never overtakes me !!!!

jaws thats a sensible thing to do
but on mountain roads you have to get somewhere before you can stop
Pulling up with 1,000 cars full of skiers stuck behind you guarantees lots of enemies on the slopes later
lol

I'd be looking at a set for one of the back axles as well if I was serious about using them at all.

When I was a coach driver, a (non-company) colleague was fined quite heavily when, with just one set of chains on, he lost the front end, buried it in a snow bank and blocked the only road in/out of a ski resort for over an hour. His boss wasn't exactly delighted either - P45 in the post!
