In the post today, letter from Avis re a traffic offence in a car I hired from them recently. Think we might have been caught by a speed camera.
If we were, we would defo only have been a few KPH over the limit. Does anyone have any idea how much of a fine I can expect, or even if the French authorities will bother?
BTW, Avis charged me another 35 Euros for the priviledge of letting me know.:(

Normally €90 if paid within a fortnight, €135 if you don't, increasing even more if you keep delaying..

Also beware that Avis may well make you pay an "administration fee" for the work they had to do to "dob you in"!
BTDTGTTS - though in my case it was not speeding but wandering into a "congestion zone" in Florence

Thanks, not too encouraging though. :(
BTW, I also had a small bump, involving a scraped bumper. No dent, no crack, on my car I would get some paint.
Just completing the claim form for the excess insurance, getting various documents together. They charged my card with 330.77 Euros for the damage, plus 65 Euros "Damage Admin Fee". And guess when it was taken from my Mastercard - the very same day I returned the car.

Just as a side note ... I remember reading on a bike forum that devices capable of reporting speed cameras locations were illegal over there, including phones with sat nav camera poi's on them and that they would be removed and destroyed! Is that true, or Urban myth?

If you are UK registered you wont until 2017 at the earliest as the UK & Ireland refused to agree the recprocal sharing of info. So the EU changed the set up & made it a safety issue that became compulsory to implement.

Not sure you would or could lose a phone, but I was as said pulled over for having one the laser detectors fixed to my rear view mirror, forgot it was there had left the rest of snooper at home so no display or alerts, just a 800€ on the spot fine, having ben escorted at speed to a barracks, very intimidating

and they did keep the detector, they even had the nerve to send a supplementary bill for 70€ to dispose of it  which I paid for fear of further abuse at subsequent trips o_O

That sounds good. I won't hold my breath then. It was my fault, everybody was driving to the limit, I just accelerated just enough to fit into a gap in the slow lane, the camera flashed right in my face, since it was right next to the barrier, on the bridge column. So they got a good pic. I was travelling north, but don't remember a roundabout.

You're OK until next year, as someone said earlier - no fine if you're in your own UK registered vehicle, DVLA won't share the details. In 2017 the rules change.

I got flashed by cameras twice in France this year - need to be more careful next time!

Living the dream.
As far as Avis is concerned I'd walk first before I hired off those robbing bar stewards!

It doesn't have anything to do with Avis per se. The rules are the same in any country in Europe.
In England, if you hire a car, and then bust a speed camera, the hire company (doesn't matter who it is so insert the name of a company you have a beef with here :D ) will be sent a S172 requirement to identify the driver. They will send the details back of the person who hired the vehicle, if they don't they are subject to extreme sanction under the law.
Consequently in this scenario, even if you are a foreigner, you will receive the prosecution notice. I have no idea how they would follow this up, my guess is that they wouldn't since you are entitled to ask for a trial, but that is only my opinion.

The other scenario is, you are driving your own vehicle in a foreign country, you get snapped a few k's over the limit. The enforcement agency I believe do actually ask DVLA for the details, however, since all EU countries refuse to supply DVLA with details when they ask, they refuse to supply them. So in this case you are fine.
It has been wrangling for a long time, DVLA want the rest of Europe to give up details of drivers to them when asked, but they refuse to reciprocate, therefore no country is prepared to bow to them.

To sum up, I am not sure where you stand. Avis may well have paid the fine and charged it back to you. You might try a recharge on Visa, but you'll probably find that there was something in the hire terms allowing them to do that. If you have been charged, well don't be too upset. The camera has done it's job, it has earned revenue, and you don't have any points on your licence. So win win, the camera did it's job (earning money) and you don't have to declare it on insurance etc. :D

Eek. That's a bit scary. Doesn't almost every Sat Nav have them on these days, and doesn't almost everyone use them?
Speed camera detection or spedd cameras programs in to your sat have will lose you tyre van and a bit of time in the nick in France I believe

I had a cam flash me last week in France. I was doing 60 in a 68mph zone (4.6t MH) I think it went off due to the size of vehicle thinking I was a hgv and then 56mph would have been the limit. Anyone else had this?

You can disable the speed camera on your Tom Tom or whatever I always leave it disabled so I don't forget when we are abroad, the fine is high as stated before, if the police check they can see it is disabled so ok.
