Why should I not install "Absolutely Maintenance Free" leisure batteries to the chassis?

Advantages:
No vent/gassing, no maintenance
Can be located in a perfect position for weight distribution left/right front/back
Lots of extra storage in habitation & garage

Disadvantages:
Road muck & grime
Cannot be inspected easily


Need the wisdom of some Funsters to help me make up my mind

Road muck & grime will not harm the battery but might eventually cause some crud around the terminals, it is also possible that stones from the wheels could damage the battery casing.

The main problem in my view is the cable entry from the battery to the habitation area

No reason why not.
Bit of brake grease around the terminals twice a year to keep them clean.
All four of mine were open to the elements.
Many commercial trucks have the batteries chassis rail mounted.
Unless the carrier is galvanised it will need some maintenance to keep rust at bay.
As its attached to the chassis it MAY come under MOT rules regarding fixing security etc.

I had underfloor batteries on my 7.5 tonner, was a pain in the arse , got covered in crap, terminals corroded and it was a mare to swap them out , not something I would want to deal with again.

We had a CI 706 until about 4 years ago. That had a leisure battery underneath the vehicle in a cradle. I moved it to under the lounge seats when I added a second battery.

Cold batteries will loose a fair bit of their capacity due to cold, just when you need the most from them.

Easy solution.....
120ah instead of 110ah....almost 10% more capacity

My 2008 CI Carioca had its batteries in an outside wind-down purpose-made cradle...

Admittedly it got covered in crud, but worked fine otherwise...

A "Beeny Box" type of battery container would overcome most of the problems mentioned. Or fit a LPG tank & free the gas locker.

Personally i think its a damn good idea, if being worried about open to the elements of crud you could always make some sort of deflector or cover to keep the crap off them.

both mine are outside in a solid cradle. don't really get any muck on them ,even when in the UK.
