We will be in Belgium on 17 December and can't decide which Christmas market to go to, it's either Bruge or Brussels.
We can only visit one so which one is the best to go to?
Would appreciate your advice please.

Daft as it may sound, and I know I'm always banging on about gravelines but we have been to many , and found this one to be as good if not better than most of the others and if you are coming back through Calais well worth a look

If the choice has to be Bruges or Brussels I would favour Bruges, mainly because it is a much nicer place to visit apart from the Christmas market.

What can you buy at these markets apart from tat?

I went to Bath last year on a Saturday(big mistake) and I spent about 2 hours being shunted around in a sea of people without really getting to see anything.

They are all much of a muchness.... Been to Frankfurt , and been to the Birmingham 'Frankfurt Christmas Market' same as . And Bristol... and Nottingham.

IMO the smaller traditional ones are better, but at the end of the day they are all pedaling the same stuff.

Like has been said, Bruges is nice anyway , Cologne is supposed to be nice but the Marathon was on last weekend so we skipped it and went to the Nurburgring instead, which if you are a motor racing fan , has a spectacular xmas market LOL

It's not really about the purchases it's about the atmosphere, though I did get my tasteful polar bears from Brugge (y)

Cologne is the best one weve been to.
Another vote for Cologne. Brugge is a very nice place but the Christmas market was very disappointing last year.

I hate shopping so I think of Cologne Christmas Market as a pub crawl with short bursts of looking at garden sheds full of old tat. Some of the sheds sell hot wine which fills the gaps between pub visits.

The Stellplatz is just a 5 min train ride from the Cathedral or a 35 min walk along the Rhine if the weather is nice.

agree with awg, the site of the Colgne Xmas markets is very good with the cathedral and the Rhine as backdrops. Some great bars around, the one man band and the fish in a bun in between them are all good! All an nice stroll if it's crisp and cold.

As a coach driver I've done a few different Xmas markets, in France, Belgium and Germany and without doubt Cologne is the best - and in fact there are actually 6 or 7 different markets scattered around in reasonable proximity. But don't go at the weekend 'cos it's manic with all the coach trips. Also been there in the van, stayed on the stellplatz which it is possible to book (we did) and took the U-bahn in from the nearby station (caution, there's two, get on the right one!).
