Several weeks ago we went to Auschwitz and I have to say, of all the places we have visited no where has left a mark quite like Auschwitz. Weeks after and I still find myself filling up when I think about the camp and all those people who suffered.Despite all the preparation before hand and reading all the reviews nothing quite prepares you for the sheer scale of the place. It was a shock and to some extent, I still feel in shock.

It was truly heart-breaking but in a strange way, I know it was the right decision to visit both camps.

If anyone is planning on visiting the site - the UNESCO museum entrance opens at 8am and is free to enter, however, you do need to obtain a entry ticket. This can be downloaded and printed prior to arrival or alternatively you can obtain from a small kiosk at the side of the entrance. Here you can also buy a guided tour for £10 each.

We stayed in the grounds on a nearby hotel just 5 minutes walk to the camp entrance at cost of £8 per night inc all services. GPS position Oswiecim N050.023122, E019.197964

My 30 year old daughter went and said it was heartbreaking. Even though they had discussed the war at school and with us she said until you visited the camps you didn't realise the enormity of it all. It left a lasting impression on her as she said it is so emotive.

What is really horrifying is it's never stopped.

How many did we just kill thanks to Tony Blair.

How many have died due to the Muslim in-fighting.

What about Africa, Vietnam, Cambodia.

It just goes on and on.

Yes, the extermination camps are particularly chilling, I could not go there, but a dead human is a dead human.

@hilldweller I know, you would think we would learn. Why the human race constantly choses to battle and kill is beyond me.

We went there in the middle of a heatwave yet both of us couldn't stop shivering, it felt so cold.

A really sobering experience and a testament to human tolerance something that seems to be faltering in this day and age.Whilst in the area don't forget the unspoilt centre of Krackow and the Wieliczka Salt Mines both world heritage sites.

I guess we are the most ruthless, efficient killers to have evolved on this planet. We'll kill anything including the planet that sustains us.

Maybe it will take some genetic manipulation to remove the old hunter/killer in us.

I found Auschwitz to be very moving but very clinical, which I suppose it was meant to be. Buchenwald on the other hand, I've got goose bumps just remembering it.

@Glandwr yes we spent a few weeks in Poland. The northern section in the lakes is extremely beautiful and like you say, Krakow is full of character and charm.

We stayed at

Centrum Dialogu i Modlitwy w Oświęcimiu

1 M. Kolbego St.

32-602 Oświęcim
Just a few minutes walk away from Auschwitz. It is a hotel/hostel for parties and individuals but allows camping (motorhomes and tents) within its grounds. Stayed there in July and found it great.

I felt bad enough when I visited Oradour-sur-Glane, cannot imagine what it would be like at one of the death camps.

I felt terribly sad when we visited Robben Island and no one was systematically killed there....I don't know if I want to face the concentration camps. Steve already suffers from PTSD and I feel a visit to one of these would tip him over into an episode. But I also feel, we should go. It should be a pilgrimage for every single one of us. Lest we ever forget.....which we shouldn't.

Take religeon out of the human race along with politicians (who stir most of wars) and i think we would have a better chance to live peacefully.... If not at least a better life !

Not much chance while tribalism and colour still play their parts.

I can recommend the reading of this book, which took me two attempts.

'After The Reich' by Giles MacDonogh
