Hawes and beyond, N. Yorkshire recommendations please. (1 Viewer)

We are heading to Hawes later next week for a few days but can easily extend the trip to a fortnight. We are not sure where to go after Hawes and wondered if we could get some recommendations ?
Keen on walking and cycling.
Suggestions gratefully received .

Go to Wharfedale (Grassington). In our opinion, much better than Hawes and better road in. Enjoy.

If you're in Hawes then a trip to the Green Dragon at Hardraw is a must. Thereafter, Ingleton (Waterfall Trail); Clapham (Ideal for Ingleborough Cave); Malham (Tarn & Cove) are also certainly worthy of consideration.

We recently did the Yorkshire Dales and stayed at Hawes which we loved - walking great. Also stayed at Bolton Abbey CC site - again lovely walking and scenery again and Marsham Old Station CAmping Site - walking distance of Marsham with two breweries. Also stayed just outside Whitby and at Middletown FArm near Robin Hood Bay - you must go to Robin Hood Bay! We had three weeks away and 3 hours rain during day light hours. A great hols with very very good sites and facilities. We didnt have bikes but a very energetic cocker spaniel

years ago while still at school we did an outward bounds trip to the dales, one of the 'walks' we did was up Ingleborough, a few years ago we repeated the trip, thought we would short circuit the walk up, well don't, the walk up from Ingleton is nice and gentle, you need to be a goat to take on the route up the side we tried even though I think it is actually the Pennine Way, must be my age

Lovely area though, hope the weather is decent for you

edit - just read back through my own post, just for clarity 'we' refers to me and Bev, yes we did meet at school (sort of) ignored each other on trips, found each other a few years later

Yes -we like the Grassington site too. The walking from site is lovely. Although I think Hawes has the advantage of being in the village so handy for pubs etc.. and still some good walks (e.g. along the valley into Bainbridge).
Bolton Abbey is also worth a visit and also good for walking (although a little bit restricted with dogs as the surrounding moors are private)

Had a Pint in the Green Dragon after we had been up the hills but didn't view the waterfall. Easy walk back to the site although you may have to fight the goats in the field across the road. Buggers wouldn't leave our dog alone.

Castle Bolton, not far away. Interesting little town, lots of good walking and cycling (both on and off road). Also Middleham.

Middleham has the castle where Richard 3 lived before becoming King, and also is a centre for racehorse training. Go to Semerwater and walk round the lake - fantastic. Countersett for the Quaker meeting house, always open, and Stalling Busk. The legend of Semerwater is in the attached poem, believed mythical until the lake's level dropped in the dry summer of 1976, revealing an Anglo Saxon settlement! It's a magic place! We used to recite this poem as a class at school:

Deep asleep it lies,
The still lake of Semerwater

Riding from. Hawes...Classic route..over Buttertubs pass to Thwaite then follow Swaledale down to Reeth, return via Castle Bolton...along minor roads passing Askrigg through Wendsleydale...shorter route returns from Low Row direct to Askrigg...both routes stunning...down side...lots of climb
Walking...endless...try Sedbergh and get onto the Howgills..less crowded than Lakes...great rounded open fells. All the dales have fantastic path networks...
Further north..terrain getting less populated..from Holwick walk Pennine way section passing High Force and Cauldron Snout..upper Teesdsle at its best...from fun web site download Keiths Pubstopovers..might be handy when campsites are not required. Enjoy you two, wish we could join you.
