I spent some 15 weeks going from here to the Uk & detoured back via France, Belgium, Holland Germany etc. A total of 10188kms (6368 miles ) & using 886,87 litres of fuel ( 195.34 gallons ) giving 32,59mpg. I don't think that's too bad, considering I spend most of my time changing gear. :D

That looks pretty good, depending what you driving of course.

The best I have had is a tad over 24 and that was after filling with BP ultimate so I have filled it again with the same to see if it was a fluke, I have tried the expensive Shell stuff and not seen much gain. Our normal is about 22 and yes I did brim it.

Hmm, I just sold my boat and would be happy to get a ÂŁ1 per mile out of it! Average would be around 60 to 80 litres per hour of running. I'm looking to buy a motorhome now and I never look at fuel consumption. It all looks wonderful to me!

I used to have a fishing boat with a 233 Mercruiser petrol engine fitted. You could actually see the needle on the fuel gauge moving down when you were on the plane. It wasn't just the cost of the fuel either, it all had to be carried down the pontoon in Jerry cans. I wasn't too distraught when the lock keeper at Swansea Marina managed to close the lock gate when I was half way through, lifting the 23 foot boat out of the water and putting two dustbin lid sized holes in the hull. After their insurers paid for the repairs I traded it in for a new 26 foot boat with a 36 hp Diesel engine, where the consumption was measured in pints per hour.....

And you have given yourself an extra 0.1 mpg on the calculation:LOL:

On a more serious note for anybody in Km and filling in litres (we all do now) don't bother converting KM to miles and then litres to gallons and using your or your calculators memory, just do Km/litres X 2.815 OK it's 0.1 under but it's easy as long as you can remember 2.815.

The two happiest days of a boat owners life :-

1. The day he buys it.

2. the day he sells it!!

True!! I am thinking about selling my current boat but hate the selling experience - this will be my last boat so it will be bittersweet!!

That is so spot on! I gave up boating in the late '90s when I finally realised I live too far from the sea to enjoy it properly. The last year of ownership was the worst. I had 8 fishing trips planned, 7 were cancelled because of the weather and I caught one flounder on the day I finally got out. Taking mooring fees, insurance, maintenance and other costs into account that one flounder (that I put back in the sea) cost over ÂŁ5,000!

Sounds very good on the face of it Gus but just forgetting to record one of those many fuel stops during your 15 weeks could make a big difference to the final figure.....;):)

True but it doesn't happen. I record it at the pump in my diary, trip reading, overall reading ,litres & price. + in most places I also ask for vat receipts to ensure the litres are on the receipt as well as the debit card ticket. ( If not paying with cash.)
getting to Dunkirk I really only had to fill once as I had 120l on the van & only used 162,59L.:)

Strange thing this boating lark....
Had that been a car or motorhome it would have been written off as a total loss.
I guess with a boat it has to either burn or sink first.

Does that mean you've got a 120 litre fuel tank?

Mine is apparently only 75, which I think is on the small side
