I'm seeking some advice for a friend so please bear with me regarding the facts!

A couple own a MH and currently insured in husbands name but wife is a named driver.. Insurance now due for renewal but due to health issues the husband can no longer drive.
First car insured in wife's name with NCB
Second car purchased recently and wife as primary insurer but with NO NCB as already allocated to first car.

The question is can anyone recommend an insurance company for the MH that will allow the accrued no claims on the 'van to be transferred to the wife's name when she now takes over the insurance? Alternatively does anyone know of a company that will give a good discount on the MH insurance because of the NCB accrued on the car?

I always believed it was the person that gained the NCB and not the vehicle. You can use it on any vehicle but only on one at a time.

Just my opinion here, so may be wrong, but I think with the wife being a named driver in the MH, she may qualify for the NCB.
If I am wrong, a few companies will mirror NCB gained on another car and stick it on a MH policy.
The second option applied to me when I insured our MH through the Camping and Caravanning club

All insurance companies will do it. You just need to negotiate.

I once had one NCD entitlement mirrored on 3 different vehicles.

Suggest you talk to Comfort and Caravanguard (or existing insurer) and explain the circumstances.

Most brokers will be keen to compete on premiums regardless of NCB

I would suggest you have a chat to the guys at Safeguard, aka Swintons. There is nothing like a good broker to find the best insurer for your circumstances - when I brought a German company car back to the UK, Swintons were the only brokers who knew an insurance company who didn't care which side the steering wheel was on!

Normally the NCB is not transferrable between cars, as it is personal to the driver and applies to the normal policy quote for the specific vehicle

However, to my surprise, most brokers dealing with specialist policies for M/H will give an appropriate discount on policies specific to that extra vehicle. I had 10 years + NCB on cars, and AIB gave me the same discount on a new policy for the M/H. Comfort do the same, but I have an issue with their misleading advertising ("365 days foreign cover" but you can't leave your vehicle overseas for more than 36 hours??)

Negotiate, but be completely honest about the background, you'll be pleasantly surprised.

many many years! since I was a kid
one easy solution is put both cars on a multicar policy which is generally cheaper and get the motorhome insurer to mirror the NCD

Try Alan Blundell. They've always given me far better quotes than anyone else particularly companies like Carananguard, Comfort, Saga etc. They mirrored my earned NCD and I've now built up 10 years on my own moho policy. Some of these 'specialist' companies quotes £300+ more.
Always check what these companies are covering and what you have to do to comply.

Comfort do the same, but I have an issue with their misleading advertising ("365 days foreign cover" but you can't leave your vehicle overseas for more than 36 hours??)

This is an extract of the wording to which you refer:

  • If for any reason your motor caravan will not be within your custody or control for a period in excess of 48 hours, then you must notify Comfort Insurance in advance.

    Seems reasonable to me.

It would be rude of me to wonder if your may be connected with these people.

Not when you advertise 365 days a year overseas cover it doesn't seem reasonable. And not when the company then refuses to insure a vehicle left parked in a secure place beyond 48 hours

Neither does it sound reasonable when a company says that, even if you are staying at a foreign location but not sleeping in your M/H parked by your front door, then you're not covered. Stay in a hotel for part of your trip, or end up in hospital for any reason, and your insurance doesn't cover you for theft or whatever.

And especially when a company offers a pro rata refund of all premiums on cancellation and then refuses to refund any part of the annual breakdown and legal cover elements.

To top it all, it is the icing on the cake when they quote higher premiums than others who do not have unreasonably restrictive clauses.

Comfort just sell one policy (at least for M/H). They are barely an independent broker, shopping around on behalf of the proposer.

It's called misrepresentation, pure and simple. The courts/ASA decide what is reasonable in the final analysis, my action against them will be put in the public domain in due course

No, I am not connected with Comfort in any way, just had my motorhome insurance with them for a number of years and been satisfied with their service.

I think you are ignoring the fact that under any insurance policy you have a duty of care to protect the insured property, I can envisage a situation where an insurer could consider leaving a motorhome parked abroad for an extended period, outside of the custody or control of the insured person, as a breach of that duty and deny a claim for theft or damage. At least Comfort suggest that you contact them so that insurers can consider the individual circumstances and whether they would be prepared to provide any cover.

I omitted to mention that they confirmed cover on my vehicle whilst parked at the top of the lane adjacent to my house in Spain for 6 week periods at a time so they certainly will take notice of the individual circumstances.

I accept that your interest is legitimate.

I am a lawyer, I fully understand the insured's duty of care as much as I also understand the obligations of traders to be truthful and forthright. Obligations on both sides.

In fact I certainly did contact Comfort beforehand, in writing, and they took their time responding, saying only that the limited cover they offer is inflexible and does not allow any vehicle to be left unaccommodated by the policyholder (note: not unattended) for longer than 48 hours. They did not offer any options, and explained that their exclusions were totally inflexible. e.g. Get rushed into hospital, no cover. Have an accident and have to leave the vehicle in the hands of a garage for longer than 48 hours, no cover. Visit friends and stay in their guest room for a weekend, no cover

They refused to explain why they advertise their policy as offering "365 days a year overseas cover" when they clearly don't. They also refused to explain why, when told their policy was useless to myself and excessively restrictive, they would not refund a single penny of the annual breakdown and legal cover when I cancelled. In fact they were obstructive.

And this was in complete contrast with other brokers, who all offered to arrange insurance to cover our specific requirements, and all of whom were considerably cheaper. AIB got the business for offering better cover, they were incredibly helpful and certainly cheaper

All I originally stated was that I have an issue with Comfort over their insurance cover, and the court or the ASA are the appropriate people to pass a judgment on those issues. I am not seeking anyone's opinion, approval or judgment, just stating the facts so that others may be better informed of my bad experience to form their own decisions.

Conclusion: I would not insure with Comfort myself on the basis of my experience and in anticipation of my having to take them to court, whereon the full details of this matter will enter the public domain.
