I have 2 small cocker spaniel dogs that will be taken with us on our journeys and was wondering how to keep them safe while driving, would they need a safety harness, not sure what the law is on dogs in vehicles.

many many years! since I was a kid
dogs must be restrained and not able to distract the driver. but more importantly both they and you need to be safe in a collision. We use harnesses and leads with seatbelt clips (clipped into rear seats) but have also used a crate, but this takes up space

Getting better month by month.
Our two Labs travel on the rear bunk bed. They wear body harnesses and use seat belt restraints attached to a running line. They can move up and down the bed, but cannot get off and more importantly cannot get thrown off the bed in an accident.

Ours have harnesses too. We have 2 cairns and they both settle down in their own beds which we place behind driver and passenger seat on the floor. They can stand up and stretch if they want but can't move far due to the tethers. Both them as us safe. We do have a small collapsible soft kennel which we put them in when we do the dover calais crossing

We tried a cage as this was what our dog was used to. Didn't work, he panicked. Now travels on Floor.

Mine too. Boy whippet travels on side bench, girl whippet/Italian Greyhound cross travels on wifes knees. But then I also drive plastic 3W cars and ride motorcycles just to top up the risk factor.

We use cages our cocker just flops out and goes to sleep the terrier isn't so keen on travelling but is notably calmer in the cage.

Thanks guys, will have to see if I can fit an anchor point on the floor behind driver seat and use dog bed, they are used to traveling in car and like to be close to use.
Regards Mike

Our Patterdale sits in the traveling seats buckled into the seat belt via a small harness.

I have on the floor behind the front seats a wheelchair anchor I'm sure I could use to fit a seat belt for my dogs.

Ours travel in harnesses with seatbelt loops over the two front seat belt posts.

Ours is in a cage without a roof just like home and it is also their bed when stopped. After next September we plan to upgrade and the dogs are the primary reason. I want a garage that is suitable to convert into a dogs bed with a fixed bed over and a front lounge.

Our Westie loves travelling in his cage (it's also his bed at night - if he decides to use it....) which fits nicely behind the two cab seats. In fact he howls if we start moving and he's not in his cage!

You can buy a seat belt attachment at most good pet stores. We attach this to a body harness to Rosie, which we attach to the rear most outside dinette seat belt. She can then choose to sit under the table, or, her preferred position, front paws dangling in the hab door foot well.
Top tip, we bought a road refresher water bowl, these are excellent, she can have a drink while we are driving, they do everything it says on the tin!
