We've got 2 of these, one for the dogs and one for the cats. They are brilliant. We've also got zoom grooms which I got off the internet.

Why do my dogs hate their Furminator? They run and hide when it comes out of the drawer.

It can pull the fur which hurts. Do it really gently at first to get them used to it. Get yourself a zoom groom, it's a rubber, knobbly brush that is soft and gentle for the dogs but also removes loose hairs.

Isn't this just a glorified dog brush ... I use one of these type of brushes:

It's different to a standard brush. Works a treat on our Border Terrier, the design of the edge allows the tool to push through the topcoat to easily and gently remove the undercoat and loose hair without cutting or damaging the dog's delicate skin. I tend to groom him with a bristle or slicker brush and or comb, he looks fully groomed but if you then go over with the furminator type tool it's amazing just how much extra dead undercoat comes out.
