What trips when you exceed ampage and how to reset? (1 Viewer)

Lots of posters say don't be intimidated by asking what you consider to be a daft question but I have such a question so apologies in advance.

On EHU, some sites offer 6 amps other up to 16 amps. So if I plug in appliances that exceed either limit, what actually trips? Something in the van or something that the site owner has to set? If it's something in the van, what is required to re-set it (after obviously unplugging the offending devices)?

Thanks

It trips on the site feed, the trip may be accessible for you to reset at the post or it may be locked in a box somewhere and you would need the site owner/maintenance man.

Martin, thanks.
What I feared. Presumably, it would be only 'our' feed that tripped rather than other users on the same post? I can imagine being stoned by angry campers, depending on the time of day, I plugged in 3000w drill!

A simple guide to help avoid tripping out is:

if on 6 amps x 230 volts = 1380 watts

if on 10 amps x 230 volts = 2300 watts

if on 16 amps x 230 volts = 3680 watts

Count up the total wattage of units plugged in, to estimate your demand, and balance accordingly.

I hope this helps.

Incidentally, will the feed give an indication of the available ampage?

Usually on the hook up post, you will see (if not enclosed in a cabinet) the mini trips. Like the three large trips on your consumer unit.

These will be annotated C6 C10 C16 relating to the supply in amps. But the campsite will tell you what the supply is, if they don't, then ask.

It is normally included in the site details aanyway.

Some places limit your amps and you should be made aware of the limit somehow, other places, certainly Spain give you a Kw/hour per day allowance which doesn't trip but they bill you for the excess, if this is how it works there will be a meter at the plug point or in the office.

I can't remember ever seeing anything written on the EHU post but no doubt it is in some places. Normally they will tell you in reception.

In my experience you usually have to ask them what the max they supply is

But if not enough and you keep popping the breaker. Ask for an upgrade to a greater amperage. Some site can do this but usually at a charge

The mini trips in the hook up post (if not enclosed in a cabinet ) will be referenced C6 C10 C16 which relates to the amperage supply, 6amps/10amps/16amps.

This information will usually be included in the sites information, or web site. If they don't tell you when you book in, ask them to be sure.

Haven't actually tripped anywhere (yet) but wanted to understand and hopefully avoid the nuisance if tripped.

i thought a 20 amp load on a 16 amp post would trip weather your paying by meter or not

Not all supplies have individual overload protection, have been on sites where one covered several hookups - and it wasn't me who tripped it!

In Morocco have seen up to 20 sockets on a single supply; was okay until a French lady used her hairdryer, came out to rest it then did it again. Five times before someone put her right. On another site there was NO protection and when a Dutch rally turned up and tried to hook up 15 vans through one supply the post actually exploded in flames! Ah happy days!
