Going to Carmarthen next week from Humberside.

Many years since I drove A40 from Raglan across past Brecon, Llandovery, etc.
Good road or go motorway for a quick run?
Don't want to hang about, need to be in C by about 3 pm.

That was actually plan A.
Granddaughter wants to go the "pretty" way.
As an ex HGV driver, mway looks favourite.

M50 down to M4 is a little hilly in places, I'll tell her them's the Beacons!

Cheers.

Try the RAC or AA route planners. I've just tried the RAC one for this journey and it came up with three alternatives, one using the M62 and then south through the middle of Wales. It wasn't the fastest but there was little between the three routes. Given the time of year avoiding motorways might be sensible. None of the three suggested routes used the Severn Crossing.

What toll?
Only involves a toll if you drop down M5 as far as Bristol.
Planning to go M5 / M50 / A440 / A449 to the Mway.
Cuts off that Bristol / bridge corner.

Regularly did the trip down from Midlands to Carmarthen & whilst the A40 is the most scenic it's longer. The quickest shortest route is Heads of the Valleys Rd - A465 & always the route I took. This cuts off a corner compared to M4 route which can be hell at certain times. There are roadworks going on at the moment on part of Heads of Valleys route though & as @MH 55 FUN said any incident on whatever's route & game over !

Drop down to Neath, join Mway Just south of there, then onto A48?
Used to use that route when I was an the road.
Not a bad run.
If there are road works on heads of the valleys, A449 / M4 looks favourite, I need to be there by about 3.30pm.

Yep that's your best bet IMV. Google maps on the day should say which is the fastest (if that's the most important to you)
