We were travelling to the west of Rouen yesterday and needed to cross the Seine. There was a handy ferry from Berville-sur-Seine to Duclair, which we thought 'hang the expense' we'll try that. Monday to Friday it runs every 20 minutes apart from a lunch break. The river is tidal and wide at this point.

In advance I estimated the cost would likely be in the region of €10 - €15, so we had a handful of Euro ready to pay.

To our amazement it cost zilch, nada, nothing: it was FREE!

Oh, and the little town of Duclair was lovely and felt very much like a small seaside resort stretching out along the bank of the river.

I've heard of free ferries in parts of Scandinavia, but didn't know they existed in France. The last one we took from Royan across the mouth of the Gironde cost an arm and a leg.

So are there any other French fare-free ferries?

PS. Back home in the UK now, unfortunately, after another great continental adventure.

There's another free one over the Loire downstream of Nantes but before Nazaire. It leaves/arrives from Le Pellerin. Takes horses too!

There's another a little further upstream at Indre which might be free as well.

Not free but there is a ferry across the Rhone delta at Salin de Giraud that only costs €5 for a motorhome and its occupants.

Only other option to get to the east side of the river is to drive up to Arles and back down so excellent value if you're heading to the south east from there or visa versa.

Bacs de Barcarin ferry...

Thanks for your post. Until I started looking I didn't realise there were still 8 ferries (bacs) still operating below Rouen, and they are all free!

Well worth a detour or two next time we travel via La Maillerie

Oh dear, what a pain!!

So just to rub it in, we arrived on the dot of 3pm as it was due to leave Berville-sur-Seine, and drove straight on. The ferry was full and two large lorries in front of us had to wait for the next crossing because there wasn't room for them.

Compare these fares to the King Harry ferry near Truro which charges £12.50 return for a motorhome over 3.5t. Distance is not far.

Satnav set to no tolls always takes us via the Siene ferry. Done the one on the Rhone as well saves a lone drive.

We've used the free ferries (Bacs) across the Seine at Onduline? and Jumieges just upstream from La Mailleraye. Unfortunately, 3.5T limit, and steep access ramps and height limits on the boat mean no motorhomes, but they're great when we walk or cycle!
