Since july 2009 And Still Going Strong
Found a few threads mentioning Caceres camping but nothing that recent. Anyone been recently with the same good comments. Can we get the bus from close by into the city, how regular was it and what was the bus price please.

Only a couple of hours from where we've been staying for a while and wanted to go for a couple of nights to give the van a run before we head off in about 6 weeks back to the UK.
Still in their peak season but for 26 euros per night and a 4 nights for 3 offer thought it sounded pretty good.

Thanks Shawn

Us too, in February. You can walk into town via a decent track. It's about 3.25 miles. Head for the old part where there are shops selling local specialities. We also went to Camping Monfrague. We were there the previous year and took the guided tour of the Vultures and also saw a pair of Imperial Eagles. The climb to the Castle is worthwhile with the vultures soaring all around you.

PS, maybe better in Spain forum, I think. ;)

We loved Caceres it was easy to get the bus and is very worthwhile visiting old town and new town, a good marker to find the site is the football stadium next door.

Hi Shawn & Emma. Can I pick your brains for any useful Information?. We are planning our trip to Portugal in four weeks time & would welcome any advice on routes or sites. We have three weeks sailing in & out of Santander. We have looked at the Algarve but feel we might not have enough time so are looking at travelling down to Salamanca & driving across to the area between Lisbon & Porto. We prefer small friendly sites & wondered if you could recommend any. Hope you e.joy the rest of your trip. Many Thanks. Josie.

Hello Josie, @Chardonnay Sorry for slow reply.

I'm afraid we're not that well traveled as some others on the forum are. There are many threads about traveling through Spain/Portugal, but I know from experience it takes a long time to read through them to find the information you need. We've only been to a couple of places which we'd recommend.
This one we stayed at in February this year and its only small but got what you need and about a 20 minute walk to the river. very nice and we would return if that way. May be a little to far south for you www.eurocampings.co.uk/portugal/setubal/alcacer-do-sal/campsite-parque-de-campismo-112688/

Probably our favourite site of any we've stayed at, www.campingasseiceira.com small site and Gary the English owner is superb. very rural and if you want to visit proper Portugal this would be a good starter after coming in from Spain.
It would fit in with your planed route just perfect. From Salamanca head down to Caceres, theres good recommendations in this thread above for sites there, (one of which we will be visiting next week when it cools off from the forty degrees were having just now) from Caceres follow the signs to Portugal via Valencia de Alcantara and cross the border into Portugal. Just over the border driving along the main road you will see Marvao, the castle village onto of the hill. Well worth a visit and there is a lovely aire just under the castle with stunning views over the land towards the Estrellas mountain range. Gary's is just down in the village below the castle at Santo Antonio das Areias.

We love the area around Marvao, plenty of walking, too hot at the moment though. Plenty of little bars that won't drain your wallet and the locals are wonderful.

We've stayed around here several times over the last 6 years and continue to come back for more.

We are leaving here in about a month and heading back up to the UK via Spain so we may cross paths somewhere.

Cheers and enjoy

Shawn and Emma

We stayed at Caceres earlier this year - nice site, all pitches with own loo and shower. Nice bar with good food and easy walk to bus stop into town. No photos of site but here are some of Caceres town - well worth a visit - storks everywhere.

Hi Shawn & Emma. Thank you so much for that helpful info. I can't believe it but we have already pre booked 2 nights on Gary's site after reading some brilliant reviews so hearing yours has reassured us. We are hoping to find a few more sites like Gary's en route. Thank you again & enjoy the rest of your adventure.
Josie.

Great info guys - thanks. Useful as we off in May next year for 5/6 weeks - Spain Portugal and back through France. Interested in the sites mentioned above. Re Monfrague site, how sloped is it? Can't bear landing somewhere and spending ages getting the camper level!! Getting old and grumpy!
