I am sure there must be someone who has but the vast majority react with horror at the very thought. The pitfalls are tremendous.

No way. It would defeat the object of having one.
I have however had mad thoughts of buying another just for that purpose but in reality it would mean not being able to use the existing one when it suits us as we would need to be booking in or out the hire vehicle.

When your on a site have a look round and check for hire vehicles. You won't need to watch for long and seeing how they get treated will soon put you right of the idea.

Many people don't respect their own things let alone somethings that's not theirs.

On a bit different tack, it's remarkable how many vans are hire vehicles in France , you look round and see people scratching their heads on various things like filling with water and stuff and then on closer inspection you can see a hire firms decal on it.

I asked the question because whilst having my car mot'ed the guy doing it who is a mate of mine asked me if I had considered hiring my motorhome out.He had rented one himself at considerable expense and seeing as apart from my allocated holidays I can only use it once a month it was a consideration though appreciate it would require further looking into especially insurance
Thanks for all replies Mark

When I was in Scotland recently I met several people who were renting their Motor-Homes from proper Businesses. The first one had done the Applecross run in a 7+ metre van with quite a few scratches down the side, telling me to give it a go in mine, "it's a bit tight in places but we got through", he said. He obviously couldn't give a dam about the damage he'd done to the van.

The second lot I met at a popular Wild-Camping stop who came over for advice on how they could get power to the numerous outlets around the van. They couldn't get the telly going and they wanted to charge their phones etc. I suggested that it could only be either a switch they haven't discovered or a fuse blown.

They came back after checking all the fuses and asked if I'd have a look. When I went over all became clear, he wasn't asking about the 12volt outlets he wanted power from the 230V ring, they'd even brought their electric kettle from home. They walk among us folks.

its a good business if you can get the marketing right £800to 1200 a week on a lay out of 40 k is a good return if you can fill enough weeks and dont get to much damage even damage is covered by the deposit/insurance

My motorhome is an 04 registration but only has 35,000 miles on it with full history,I paid probably just below market for it so rental income could mean it owes me nothing after 12 months and seeing as suspect my job may only last another 5 years a different source of income would be advantageous.

Someone must make money out of it else there'd be none to rent , but when you rent your only one out , would you like to go in it again, probably not if it was me:(

Another thing to think about is how it's going to be abused, although it's not done a lot of miles, it is twelve years old , going to need a fair bit of maintenance shortly.

Have thought of doing this myself, how did you go about it? The worry is my own being damaged, it seems some people aren't as careful as I know I would be.

I hired before buying and it turned out to be brand new.
I drove it around france and was as careful as careful can be. Not a mark anywhere and I was chuffed, then when i got to depot realised I had to fill gas before returning, less than a mile from depot clipped a mirror with a bin waggon and lost repeater lens.
Don't think I'd want to hire mine out

I wouldn't want to rent out Jemima but f I had a second van that I didn't use myself I would consider renting it out, possibly via an agency as they would handle all the insurance and aggro.

There is a hire company in Scotland that buys up 15 brand new motorhomes every year.
Adds a few toys
They rent them out from April until mid October and sells them all before end of october.

He sells them for more than he pays for them. The total rental surplus is all profit.

No servicing costs as they are only 6 months old when sold.

Most of his advertising is on google.

So there are lots of points to consider:

It is possible to arrange specialist insurance, separate from your personal policy.

You would need to charge a big refundable deposit up front £1k - £1.5k.

You could hire it out through an agency, who would organise marketing, booking administration and insurance (for a fee).

You would need to be available to meet hirers and go through with them how everything works.

You would need to be available for when the hirers return.

You would need to check the van very carefully - inside and out, to see if there was any damage. And agree any deduction from the deposit if necessary.

You would need to clean and service the van ready for the next client.

Minor damage may not be a big issue, but consider implications if van is not in a fit state to go out with the next customer, who had booked it for their main holiday!

Major repairs can take weeks and months for parts and work to be undertaken.

Most hirers are not experienced with either the size of the vehicle or the equipment it is fitted with. Most will suffer a mishap of some sort while the van is out on hire.

How do I know all this? A friend bought a new van for hiring out and mrs mikebeaches and I looked after it! Never came back without some sort of damage.

Oh and unbeknown to the hirers, it was fitted with a tracker that produced an online record of the speed etc Scary stuff - I don't believe anyone on here would drive their own van at the speeds that were logged down the Autoroute's.

As I said, lots to consider!
