Home Insurance for long trips (1 Viewer)

We have just moved back into a house after full timing for three years. Talking to the house insurance companies no one wants to insure us if we leave the house empty for over 60 days. This is not a lot of use to us as we still want to travel in the van and 2 months just is not long enough.

Does anyone know a good house insurance company that is reasonable priced that will cover us for 3/4 months?

We use Nationewide, they do have a condition that somebody has to visit the house every two weeks & you are supposed to turn the gas off with the exception of leaving it on to prevent frost damage.
We haven't found anybody else that will give us cover without charging the earth for it.

We are with Nationwide,

But I would be very interested if you could confirm if the 180 day policy you have has any special requirements similar to the Nationwide, e.g. Having people visit the property at regular intervals during the 180 day absence, etc .

Or can you just leave it empty with no one checking it for the whole 180 days.

Same as Superk, we are with Comfort for our home and motorhome which gives us 120 days, and whats not covered with one policy is covered with the other, and as they are specialist Motorhome insurers they always know what we are talking about when we have any queries, where some companies mention satellite dish or something different and they have not a clue what you are talking about. I have been looking to change to Saga from the C>C>C . Saga will do 180 days away subject to same conditions as C C C so I am waiting for my renewal details from C C C to make a comparison.:thumb::thumb:

I have been checking the Comfort site and it appears you have to pay and additional premium to extend the cover for more than 60 days, is it very expensive to extend it to 120 days and do they apply any additional conditions,

I still have to find one that beats Nationwide on cost, most want to add an extra charge once you get over 60 days. I asked when shopping around if it was ok if someone checked the property regulary & was told that this wasn't acceptable. Nationwide was the only one which had a clear statement regarding unoccupancy.

Hi,

We have been with Nationwide for about 4 years and you are correct their conditions are very clear and they also seem very competitive,

However, the requirement for visiting the property every 2 weeks is going to get very difficult for us in the future so we have been looking for alternatives and as you have already pointed out that is not as easy as it would first appear and the costs can get quiet high.

I have checked some of the suggestions on this thread and the C&CC insurance appears to be the only one that gives standard cover for 180 days, while the others as you say only provide 30 or 60 days as standard and then you have to pay an additional premium.

I'm not sure how the C&CC prices compare with Nationwide or any of the others but if I have read their conditions correctly the 180 days is standard and on the surface there is no requirement to have people visit the property, but i will try and confirm that next week.

The 'extra charge' from Comfort - just phone and get a quote - they're friendly and specialise in motorhomers - as best I can recall the total cost was less than our previous insurer.
