We had a 60 watt folding solar panel connected earlier delivering free energy from the sun to the batteries in the van.
We decided to unplug it when the reading on the van told us it was going up and up, it went to 15.5 amps, more than its ever shown on hook up.
Could it be the controller on the panels isn't working and would it have done more damage had we left it connected?
The batteries are now reading 13.9 amps, (good) on the readout above the door.
That's after settling for 2 hours

I hope all ends up OK, I was 'given' a portable solar panel by a caravanning 'friend' cooked my batteries as it had no regulator, told him, he then said the same happened to his that is why he gave it to me

Amps or volts?

I'm guessing you meant volts and if you're getting 15+volts from the solar panel then there may be a problem with it's regulator (if it has one).

It does have a regulator stuck on the back, I'm assuming it doesn't work by doing that?

I didn't want to like your post, that's a shame as they are not cheap, batteries that is.
Nice friend?

Yes I meant volts. Didn't think.

Just checked the batteries, they are ok, not smelling nor fizzing and thankfully we disconnected the solar panel when we did.

It would be unlikely that such a regulator would give out over 15 volts but it would need a decent meter on the outputs to see what you're getting. If it has gone faulty then you can replace it without binning the actual panel.

Here's the picture of the controller and the sign on the back, it's now showing a red light saying discharging but we've pulled the fuse between the wires so as not to overcharge batteries.
