Can anyone out there please help as I am now desperate.

On a recent trip throughout Europe, as we were preparing to return home to the UK our gearbox kept throwing out of 5th gear we called at a local garage in Bulgaria to be told that it was a common problem which would take about 3 hours to fix but unfortunately they did not have the parts i.e. 5th gear and synchro which would take about 4 days for them to order and then fit.

We have 2 dogs which had just been examined by the local vets and their passports stamped we were also booked on the Dunkirk to Dover ferry in 5 days. We were told by the garage that it would be OK to drive all the way in 4th gear but to keep it to about 50 MPH which we did, 1780 miles is no fun at 50 MPH but we got to Dunkirk in time to catch the ferry (just).

On returning home we took the motor home to our local garage who I must point out are not gearbox specialists, they fitted a new 5th gear and synchro and whatever else was needed.

THE BOX STILL JUMPS OUT OF 5th GEAR!

Has anyone experienced the same problem and can you please help or advise.

We are away for the weekend in the motor home without wifi but will answer any advice on Tuesday.

Thank you,

Ken

Sounds very much like the selector fork has got bent or is badly worn...and that will mean a gearbox stripdown.
If the fork is bent/worn it won't push the synchro ring fully home so will pop back out under load.

We are now back home after a great weekend away touring Lincolnshire and we have our WiFi back.

Thanks pappajohn for your answer to my problem.but since I put my first post up the following has happened -

When we set off on Saturday morning we drove to the M62 (about 6 miles) in 4th gear, once on the motorway I selected 5th gear and held it in, after about 2 miles at 70mph I let go of the gear leaver and it stayed in 5th even decelerating down to 50 and then accelerating back up to 70, it stayed in gear for about 20 miles until I reached the exit from the motorway, I then changed down normally through the box into first and set of from the junction holding it in 5th for a couple of miles after which it stayed in, if I let go of the gear leaver as soon as I have changed into 5th it jumps out.

Could it be a linkage problem?.

I guess it could be if the cable has play and isn't fully moving the selector into position.
Holding it for a while it may drop into mesh with normal vibration and stay there.

This sounds like the selector fork has worn thin and not moving the outer gear far enough to engage fully once selected. Holding the gear stick for a while will give the ring enough time to drop over the locking plates.
Holding the gear lever is probably the cause of the original problem.
It needs fixing before it is worn to the point that it cannot disengage 5th gear.

Might be worth checking the engine mounts, if they are worn the engine can move excessively on acceleration & deceleration causing the linkage to jump.

I was under the impression ALL fiat vans were cable linkage so emgine/gearbox movement shouldn't make any difference.

Yes but don't they have external links that connect to the cables and the lever end of the cable in the cab is effectively connected to the chassis so excessive movement could put pressure on the links. It was only a suggestion that might be worth investigating.
