I have an unlocked Doogee Valencia2 dual sim smartphone which seems to do everything that a Samsung does. Battery life OK except when in a weak mobile signal area.

How times have changed, when my own daughter was in her early teens, my landline bills could only be described as fictional. Now it is mobile usage, girls will be girls......;)

We've got Motorola Moto E phones on contract with Tesco for £7.50 a month, 24 month contract, 250 mins, 5000 texts, 500gm broadband - so if you need a contract too look at Tesco as they have good packages plus the benefit is that the phone is covered by their warranty for the 2 year period too in case it malfunctions (not breakages etc of course). Good screen size and easy to use, robust but slim frame. They do the Moto G4 also which starts at £12.00 a month for 500 mins, 5000 texts, 500mb data, £14.50 or £1000 mins, 5000 texts, 1gb data (each monthly charge includes £3 'handset payment'). You can add more data too.

Or you could just buy one on Ebay:

Choose a monthly tariff where you get a slightly out of date smartphone for free?

I can thoroughly recommend the cheaper Wileyfox phone - performs as well as phones costing three times as much.

Bought one for my wife, after recommendation from very knowledgeable IT technician son!

Almost the same here.. I used to be an Apple man, moved to Android as it seems to offer a few things i wanted.
Had a Sony experia (s/h) but it had some charging issues.. Based on the spec my son recommended this,
Amazon product ASIN B019FMN3K2
I love it... If can even emulate the Sony layout so looks like my old one...
Sim free so takes any network. Does have duel sim sockets as well.
Minor complaint the battery life seems a bit short BUT As my son keeps telling me I have the brightness up to high and leave stuff running all the time.. Worst case at least with this you can open the back and replace the battery.. Try doing that on an Iphone or Sony etc..

Hey guys with useful sons: the Wileyfox Spark is more up-to-date than the Wileyfox Swift - but cheaper. How come? Pros and cons between the two please?

AND the reply

"Get the swift 100% , the spark is more recent but they have cut corners with spec so is actually lower spec than the swift , the swift is what you have & is currently £99 on Amazon "

What's budget ???
Bought my daughter a £40 Huawei which is acceptable (just about)
Bought my son a Sony M5 for £199 (on offer) I've been stunned by its performance, can't fault it ! At least as good as Apple/Samsung (I think better) and a third of the price.
Both phones purchased payg from Argos.
Both have 'three' 3-2-1 sims, as they mostly use wifi at home it's a good solution. A £10 top up lasts a long time...

I got a Vodafone Smart Ultra 6 after much research & many reviews putting it at the top of the "Best Budget Smartphone" tables.
EG: http://www.trustedreviews.com/vodafone-smart-ultra-6-review

Currently £115 at Amazon [but the price does fluctuate by a few £££]
Amazon product ASIN B013F8UIX2
It is a rebadged ZTE Blade
The branding is discreet - with the case & the Nova App launcher I see no reference to Voda at all.
...and it cost a couple of quid to unlock it via an eBay code & just minutes

I was in the vodafone shop a while back with my daughter, sorting out yet another faulty iphone. they have the previous generation samsung s3 mini for £80. probably less now.
i only upgraded last time because of the silly cheap offer. the s3 mini does pretty much everything and the screen is not silly big and easy to damage

My last phone was a mini S3 now in the boss's hands, I thought it was good until I got my Cubot X15 the S3 seems very poor by comparison, low res screen that is hard to read web pages can't see the screen in bright sunlight, slow processor, battery life not as good and it recently had a new battery (replaced under warranty). I agree the X15 is a bit big with a 5.5" screen but it does mean I don't have to carry a tablet as well, also the Bluetooth works much better, the S3 could be a pain connecting to the car sometimes and a real pain with the stereo in the Motorhome (Parrot chip).

Thanks for the replies and suggestions.. all very helpful ..

original budget was up to around £150 .. but since it's a present for her 16th birthday I went a little more and have ordered a Motorola MotoG4 and let her personalise it... http://www.motorola.co.uk/products/moto-g

So to further this thread.....what would you recommend for an 11 year old. Something 'cool' enough not to be teased about, but old enough not to be worth stealing, prob needs to be on 02 and also pay as you go. No more than £80 for the phone?
