7.10 this morning all hell let loose, the most teriffic thunder storm with giant 2" hailstones. Put 5 dents in the Volvo bonnet, 30 odd in next door's Jag, and damage to all the other cars around. Insurance co don't want to know "Act of God" they say, so get it sorted yourself........Barstewards.
Sorry, no pics.
Cheers, Dave:(:(

In July last year we had hailstone damage to both the MH and conservatory roof. Both insurance companies paid up without a quibble

In Co Durham one insurance company opened a temporary office to enable them to deal with all the car damage claims quickly

I would request a summary of your policy if you do not already have one.
AND READ IT.
You could well find you are insured.

Try one of the paintless dent removal firms, there are franchises all over the country. I've used the local bloke to me twice on my Audi - he took a dent out that was there when I bought it, and again when a colleague reversed into my car in the works car park o_O

http://www.shropshiredentremoval.co.uk/?gclid=CPWv8_DPgs4CFVUo0wodhHMEkQ

It'll still cost you a bit but much less than a normal bodyshop. It's very clever how they do it - very gently tap the dent out with shaped rods to go behind the dent - or pull it out with a slide hammer attached to a hot glued pad on the dent, then tap the pulled-out dent back into the right shape again. Did a perfect job on my car, and the colleague put a fair old dent in the door! So long as the paint isn't broken they can generally do it. £60 last time he came to me, if I remember rightly.

Trust me you are covered ! Damage is damage whether its accidental malicious or what is termed "acts of God" In my work (retired now) I had to carry out dozens of storm damage surveys to buildings. As far as I know all weather falls within the same category. Some one is having you on !

When you think about it, everything that happens is an act of God (if you are a believer). You are covered. Accidental damage is accidental damage, unless the policy has an exclusion on it that I haven't seen before.

Billy Connolly's boat sank due to an act of God (a storm).
He took God's representatives, the church, to court and won.

Oh yeah, that was a work of fiction wasn't it.

Sorry guys, but having spent 36 years in the industry, latterly as Underwriting and Claims Director of a major UK Household insurer, no UK policy has an "Act of God" exclusion..

Your policy will tell you what you are covered for ("insured perils" or "insured events").

Your policy does not cove you for anything other than these "perils".

You will also have two lists (typically) of exclusions. The first will be " general exclusions". The other list will be specific to the peril involved.

So for example, your comprehensive policy will say that you are covered for "accidental damage to your car" OTHER than (say) a pig falling from the sky. So provided your car was accidentally damaged (and the policy will contain a specific definition of "accidental" - If it doesn't, then the common use of the word (say the OED definition) would be applied to the word), and the damage was not caused by a pig falling from the sky or general exclusion, then you will be covered.

If you don't have a comprehensive policy, then of course damage to your own vehicle will not be covered.

Obviously I don't know your actual policy wording, but I can guarantee it won't have "act of God" as an exclusion. It MIGHT specifically exclude damage to your vehicle by hailstorm, but unless it does have this exclusion, you should be fine to claim on your policy.

You will (unless protected) lose some No Claims entitlement (you have after all made a claim), and there will (probably) be an excess to pay.

Hope this is helpful, but please can we move away from the perception that insurance policies exclude Act of God. They haven't for at least 36 years!

As a retired insurance broker I can assure you that there is no such thing as an 'Act of God exclusion'. Whoever told you that must have been a total idiot! The only thing is that unless you have protected NCB on your policies a claim will affect your premium for a few years in the future.

Protected NCB will not prevent your premium going up in the event of a claim...make a claim and yes your 60% discount (or whatever) will still be available. However, the basic premium before the application of your protected NCB discount will rise!

eg with mickey mouse numbers so you see how it works

basic premium pre-claim £100. 50% NCB = premium £50

Make a claim, basic premium is now £200. 50% NCB protected = premium of £100

Crafty eh?

Back OT, the hail stone damage. my belief is you should be covered unless your policy specifically excludes hail stone damage. Good luck!

When I was a body shop manager, a customer with a Landrover Freelander was caught in a hail storm on the continent. There were over 150 dents in the roof, bonnet and along the rounded section at the tops of the doors, just below the windows. It became an insurance repair but we used a specialist dent removal company and every dent was removed successfully.
It may be cheaper than excess, loss of no claims and increase in policy renewal, to use a dent removal specialist and not claim on insurance.

LOL - no such exclusion when I first started my first insurance employment - in April 1967 LOL And it wasn't a new thing, then. The 'bit' of a household policy which covered it was that entitled 'Storm, Tempest and Flood' LOL

Always wondered when they'd last had a Tempest claim on a dwelling in Birmingham ........
