Heading Down to sarlat-la-Canada in August over 3 nights. Would welcome any suggestions for route / places of interest and recommended stop overs. Have a Bailey 745 with 3mtr bike trailer
So possible restrictions on some sites.

Since 2011 therefore I'm not a newbie anymore
Look on Via Michilen to get route. We now use the Autoroutes as quick and easy. Plan for three days (we travel 250-300 miles a day)

Calais, first night at Neuchtel-les Bray, then south of the Loire at a Chateau and then onto Sarlat.

You can do the Toll free road, but I believe that now has some toll sections.

We stayed at Sarlat a few years ago, great place, lovely market 2 times a week. Free guided tour around the town on Wednesdays. And close enough to all the good castles on the Dordogne.

If you are going out of season don't forget to get your ACSI book and save money on the campsites

Look in the Resources section, Best toll and non toll routes France. Everything you need is here for this and future trips. there is also a download for Spain.
Safe Travels.

Have a look at this one Broken Link Removed very near Sarlat and a cycle track on disused railway near by. Possibly quite crowded this time of year.

We always use Neufchatel-en-Bray when heading south... (we always have an evening crossing though)

Family trip from Calais? A16 > A28 > A10, stop off for a day visit to Parc Futuroscope north of Poitiers (huge aire, but 3.5m height limit), then across country to Sarlat.

We do Calais to Futuroscope in a day after an early start but we share the driving and it's a long haul.

If anyone's into prehistory, Les Eyzies de Tayac Sirieul is full of the stuff - more than you can shake a spear at. Castelnaud la Chappelle has a chateau with replica siege engines and a great view. Beynac-et-Cazenac also has a chateau. You can hire canoes for trips along the Dordogne pretty much anywhere, and there's Gabare (boat) rides from La Roque-Gageac. At le Bugue there's a big open air historic rural life type museum, and if you want to see some excellent real cave art try the Grotte de Rouffignac - Mammoths, Woolly Rhinos, plus Cave Bear pits etc etc.

La Roque Saint Christophe (near Peyzac le Moustier) is a historic troglodyte village built into a cliff face - pretty unique.

Sarlat itself has a picturesque historic centre just off the modern main street. Virtually all the places I've mention above have aires or tolerate overnight MH parking, apart from Rouffignac. Les Eyzies and Le Bugue are especially good, with grassy parking near to rivers.

If you visit Le Bugue excellent parking with picnic tables near the river with the Aquarium and historic village type attraction next door. Can recommend both for children and adults.
Parking in Sarlat can be a challenge in high season!
Les Eyzies --- again very large dar park downhill from the river.

Hi Tommos,
Where are you crossing the water? We live in the Dordogne, and use the Dieppe/Newhaven route, but if you use Calais (ferry or tunnel) cut across to Rouen, and its a nice run down through Rouen, Evreux, Dreux, Chartres, Orleans, Vierzon, Chatereauroux, and south towards Limoges and Brive.

We have a Kon-Tiki and drag a Smart car trailer with no problems.
Lots of scenery on the way, and easy to avoid peage sections if you wish, or just hop on and do a bit of easy driving. Just remember to keep right when you approach the toll booths as some of the barriers have height restrictions and are for cars only!
The Dordogne is beautiful, that's why we moved here.........:) www.laforetvillefranche.com
