So the kids are out of school, places will be busy. We only want to drive enough for the better weather and probably inland beside the rivers or lakes.
Who has the cheapest prices for aires and campsites?
Where would you go? We have 5 or 6 weeks.

Aug 09 to date 9,000 miles!
Inland in France is fine at any time of year - however - lots and lots of small businesses, restaurants and shops close for the vacances, which will be any time (or all of the time) between Bastille day and the fete de St Jean - mid July to mid August - although some places are 'clever' and stay open then, only to close for their hols in later August !

It really is pot luck - but if one place is shut - just move on. Not like any of us is 'stuck' wherever, is it?

Why not do half and half? That's what we did last year. France is lovely but we find it a tad dear for eating out . Germany is amazing and much cheaper eats if you are a foodie like me! We loved Freiburg.

I'd go with both as well. We loved Germany, especially Freiburg. Make sure you have plenty of cash on you though.

There are some places (entire towns/areas) that don't accept Visa or MasterCard. We discovered this in Garmisch, in a restaurant after we had eaten and didn't have cash. Luckily the people there were used to it and one of them gave me a lift around the town until we found the bank with cashpoints that my cards would work in.

We've never stayed on campsites in either country so can't help with them there are plenty of other places to stop.

I'm sure you know about aires in France and in Germany there are plenty of Stellplatzes varying from just parking places to ones like the one in Freiburg which is in a lovely spot close to town with water, electric and space to sit outside. A campsite in all but name I suppose. From memory I think that one was €10 per night with coin operated meters for the electric.

Loreley is one of my favourites too Brian you can just sit and watch the barges ....always something different to see and a gentle stroll into the village.
@irnbru Sandra there are so many places to stop on the Moselle and the Rhine nearly every town and village has a motorhome stell platz
for motorhomes along the river.
We would have been there now had it not been for the house sale

We have no choice other than the summer hols unfortunately.

We are almost decided on the Ardeche in August. Inland, near lakes etc, hopefully a little more relaxing. Not too far from the coastline though if we fancy having a run out.
