Just my own experience, got a quote, answered all their questions online took out the insurance, then 8 days later get an email saying we need proof of your no claims discount; no problem sent my car insurance NCD proof, but no they want it for the motorhome, ahem - the one I'm insuring for the first time! Oh as you don't have any NCD that will be an extra £386, on top of £365, no thank you just cancel my policy and refund my payment (within 14 days).

Got a new quote, even better breakdown cover and other benefits and its £380 total from Caravan Guard, through Allianz, and AA cover. More than happy with my new quote and Caravan Guard can kiss my silver motorhome bonnet!

NEVER...... Accept a first Safeguard quote.... They do try it on..
I left them and went to Comfort for 2 years as they did some extra cover for Morocco.
When I went back they quoted me £499... I was only paying about £330 ish before and had been with them for 10 years...

30 seconds on hold "while they checked" and they could suddenly do £299 !!!!!!

Yes, they are all rip off merchants but the way they did it was not conducive to me being their customer. I also got a discount for the one I eventually got, so that's good advice.

Got it taken off, not had it checked yet but will get it done ASAP. Covered the holes with duck tape to keep it dry.

That kind of behaviour stinks
Reminds me of second hand car dealers rather than insurance professionals

Sorry but it's not a rip-off. It stated clearly on their home page.

No claims discount can only be used on one vehicle. The OP is still using his no claims discount for his car and is therefore not legible to claim the discount for his motorhome so the insurance company has recalculated the premium when the correct information is provided.

As with everything you need to read everything first and ask questions if you don't understand before being disappointed.

You're mis quoting me
Please re read my post
I was commenting on @tonka 's post which suggests an 'elastiated' pricing policy.

Shoddy at best - dishonest at worst

Yes but most Motorhome insurers will mirror your car no claims sounds like sharp practice to me, also Caravan Guard will not insure personal imports which I would have thought is against the free trade agreement.

Hi Jangar, I work for Caravan Guard and was sorry to hear you weren't happy with your quote. It does sound strange we weren't able to give you ‘any NCD’. We are in most cases able to mirror no claims discount from a car insurance policy.
I realise the ship has probably sailed and you have taken cover elsewhere but if send me a message me with your surname and postcode I'll more than happily have someone look into this for you and give you an answer as to why your car insurance record was not taken into account. Thanks Liz.

Don't forget.....insurers reserve the right to wind you up any way they want.
They are under no obligation to insurer anyone or anything and if they do they can charge any premium they see fit.
It's up to the buyer to buy or walk away, not for them to explain themselves.
When I searched a quote for my car the search returned a lowest of £280 to a highest of a little over £2000.....for identical cover.
Went to Hastings direct.....£145 for identical cover.

First timers to MH, bought the Dethleffs in January. Have 2 cars insured with LV and after been given the run around with so called specialist MH insurers. Rang LV yes they would insure and although a 3rd vehicle accepeted the 9 years NCD. All in all with euro breakdown £320. Didnt't need the euro cover until December, but as it was in the same 12 months wouldn't allow the deferment until the December. Like all policies don't know how good yntil you test it.

Never the cheapest, but always the best! I have two pickups, motorhome , tractor, house, farm, public liability all with them, anything I want to know they have all the info at hand in the office, four miles down the road, no phone calls , no call centres , no unexplained sudden rises in premiums.(y) Just go in and it's sorted in front of you.

Don't you agree that this no claims discount for car and van is. TOTAL RIP OFF?

If i were to have a claim on my car insurance, do you think that my motorhome premium would not be affected the following year.

An insurance company is protecting YOU as a risk and therefore the no claims discount is for the person not the vehicle.

I agree that some might be a bit more accident prone in their 7 metre motorhome, than in a V. Corsa but if they had claim on their car insurance they would suffer next time on their motorhome premium.

Smoke and mirrors i tell ye..........

Probably got it off his chest and done with it.

They obviously monitor these things and felt the need to make contact.

In my experience of insuring commercial vehicles and private cars any NCB earned on one type of vehicle is not transferable to the other and is only applicable to one vehicle at a time.

Most insurers will offer a discretionary discount on a new policy and may call it NCB but they are under no obligation to do so and as far as I am aware a claim only results in losing the NCB for that policy. Premiums will undoubtedly increase on renewal of other policies because your claims history will be worse.

That's been my own experience over the years, not saying that I like it though.

Regarding the point that a claim on your car insurance affecting your motorhome insurance on renewal. Although the reverse I had to claim on our motorhome insurance in May due to hailstone damage in France. I informed my car insurer at the time and they said it will not affect the premium at renewal. Ive just received the car insurance renewal and it has only increased a few pounds. When I renewed they confirmed it will not be logged in my claim history. Could it be because it was a none driving claim. I am sure it will affect my motorhome insurance next year.

We have today changed horses. After doing the rounds we've obtained better cover with AIB and saved almost 30% and well over £100 on the renewal offered by Comfort. Full EU and UK breakdown and recovery included.

The only thing they will not cover is bikes being stolen from the bike rack. They and Saga advised that it's almost an uninsurable risk as the theft rate is so high! :cycle:

I am with Saga last winter we were in Spain when my motorhome insurance was due to renew (FEB) . Unfortunately my error thought it was automatic renewal , they cancelled the policy so i was uninsured from Feb to April when we returned to the UK to find out . All the paperwork was waiting for me ,renewal had been £442 after 6 years continual cover so i phoned them and asked for the policy to be renewed . They explained that it was not possible in case a claim might arise in the interim period and i would have to take out a new policy , after going through all the question which i answered from my old schedule they quoted me £282 .
A lesson learnt

I have recently purchased my first MH and have insured through Caravan Guard. On my initial inquiry the quote was a little higher than anticipated in relation to previous quotes however the call handler came back to me with a like for like quote which matched previous ones. As discussed by others above, I do not have a transferable no claims bonus (NCB) however I have been given an introductory discount based upon my provision of evidence of my NCB for my car.

I guess the nature of the insurance industry is such that one has to negotiate and play the game a little to get an affordable quotation.
