It seems that the majority of Brits returning home via the Calais/Dunkerque ports will load up their trolleys at either Carrefour in Cite Europe or Auchan in Coquelles.
Both have reasonably good selections of popular wines at reasonable prices.
I know there are other outlets that have more specialised stock or at better prices but the majority use Carrefour or Auchan.

What many travellers miss out is the liquor store Terre De Boissons on the lower level at Cite Europe, I think it's on the site of the old Tesco store.

A huge selection of beers, spirits and wines. Prices don't look too bad and it's a pleasure to just browse the shelves (while Mrs is browsing the C&A racks upstairs!)

If the tax is less in Belguim slightly further up the coast you have a real tobacco shop and if it is fags and tobacco people want i think Luxembourg is the least on tax. Route66 in the south is east to to on the way home if down that way,

Tobacco? Belgium? Terre De Boissons, as the name implies, is a liquor store - in France.

Yes, looks like a really nice store.
We had a quick look in there a few weeks back but I didn't really look at prices to see how they compare.
It was very well laid out and looked classy/pricey so it will be interesting to see if others have purchased there and how it compared.

Richard.

The beer selection is very good but personally find the wine selection is average at best and quite expensive compared with other stores.

Calais Wine Superstore and Majestic have good stock and well priced.

Depends on what you want, but for bargain New World wines and Continental/UK beer we always use Pidou at Transmaark. Some prices are pennies more than the Hypermarkets, but is literally less than 2 minutes off the motorway and open 24 hrs 7 days a week!

Malcolm

Ps I wonder what the duty free rules will be in years to come.

Aaah Notakwak - but that's now!

Pre EU we went camping in Italy in BiL's VW Devon conversion - they sleeping in the van with their 3yo and us in a tent. As we came back towards Calais it positively heaved down during the night at the last overnighter but we couldn't hang around to see if it dried out in view of the ferry booking (no mobile phones or interwebnet in those days!) so, wet tent wet coats wet nappies .....we made it and when we got back to Calais as we went through the 'enclosed' bit we were PRAYING for them to stop us and pull us into the shed so we could sort out and repack in the dry.

No such luck - waved through with smiles!

Separately in 1976 (the summer of the drought) husband and I went camping to Playa de Aro, in a mini van. Unfortunately and no idea why - husband (I didn't drive then) got deli belly round about Perpignan, and we had to drive back sporadically between bouts and - funnily enough - he was grumpy as hell. (No motorways of course but at least that meant there were plenty of bushes along the roads to go behind and we'd stopped and bought a new pack of loo rolls. But it ain't pleasant when you feel like that)

Guess what? Yup - they pulled us at Dover ........ Not that we actually had anything other than the 200 fags each we'd bought on the boat - but I can remember him positively snarling (he wasn't a snarler at all!) at the Customs bloke that if he could f...ing well find anything he was looking for, he could f...ing well 'ave it, cos the way he f...ing felt, he could do with a f..ing large brandy himself right now - but we'd f...ing got none!

They EVEN looked behind the battery - behind the divers seat, under the floor in the back. Nuthin.

So that will be what it will be - it didn't stop us having holidays abroad before, and it won't stop us again!

Yes - fags will no doubt cost more - but that will save the NHS money in future cos I absolutely believe far less people will be able to afford to smoke. I'm still a smoker - and I think that's brilliant!

I was saying pretty much the same as to people coming from outside the EU not pretty much the same as it is now.

Funny you saying thats brilliant. I was one saying that when the smoking ban started and i was smoking at the time. Three years and three month now withought and the wife is on a vaping machine and down to around five a day.
