hi
We're travelling down to Spain next week, we have a back box fitted to our bike carrier.

I've seen various things that suggest that we need a warning hazard square on the back of the box, but some that say this is only needed if your carrying bikes.

Can anybody advise please?

You will need the warning sign.
It is because it sticks out the back of your vehicle.
They have spells when the target things like this. We were picked up for this last year with our bikes. They explained, in good English as well as Spanish, that is was because it was an extension of our vehicle length.

Not long enough, but a little common sense helps..........
Get a warning sign (plastic) and use it, as you WILL be stopped and fined on the spot and if they are in a good mood they may weighed as well to see if your back axle is overloaded just for the fun of it. A few quid well spent.(y)

I thought that only if the extension was in excess of 1 metre then the red/white sign is needed?
I believe that is the rule in UK but try arguing this point with Spanish Traffic Police

Just looked it up and you are right any projecting load in Spain, Portugal and Italy needs one. Not seen them on a-framed cars though

Not required..
Trailers and A framed cars should have two warning triangular reflectors.. on the lighting board or trailer.
A Frames don't matter,,,they are illegal in Spain anyway,,,BUSBY..
