Yes you need one and technically for Italy it must be aluminium not plastic. Why ? Well obviously, the expensive aluminium ones are made in Italy.

Hello Plumbomb,
It just so happens that I am doing exactly the same trip through the same countries in 3 weeks time.
Will you be posting your experiences and campsites etc?

You also need one in Spain for the bike rack without bikes on it, As it is classed as a projection outside the overall vehicle length. I'm supposed to use one ( keep forgetting to fit it. lol) even though mine is a homologated extra & on the log book.

Hello Plumbob,
You will be 2 days ahead of us and so I will read your posts with real interest.
We were thinking of something like this:
Brussels (Camping Grimbergen)
Liege (Camping l'eau rouge
Luxembourg City (Bon Accueil)
Freiburg (to see some friends)
Lucerne (TCS Camping Sempach)
Lake Como (The Magic Lake)
Lake Iseo (Camping Iseo)
Lake Garda (Camping Fornella)

Wouldn't worry too much about the sign being aluminium, I tried to buy one in Sardinia two weeks ago but they only had plastic ones and the guy didn't have a clue about the requirement! Sticking to the plastic one unless I see an aluminium one as they will last longer

We stayed at Camping Punta Do Oro. (2011 & 2012) (
If you can get a lake side pitch you will have one of the finest lake views in Italy I.M.O. You will be within walking distance to the town and reasonably close to supermarket shopping and wine shops etc., including market days.
We loved it, in fact we returned the following year just to get a lakeside pitch and most evenings we would just sit in front of the motorhome on the edge of the lake, sipping wine and watching the people swimming, fishing and touring the lake. Lots of other campers doing the same, so relaxing with amazing scenery. A few pictures for you.

Wow.
Thank you so much for replying and including the photos.
I've checked the site out and, unfortunately it doesn't seem to be an ACSI site.
I might pay the price and go there anyway, though.
Once again, thanks for your help.
Ken
