Could I put a 12volt cigarette / hella plug on this to run my laptop in the van ? Rather than the mains lead.
TIA

Short answer is probably no as most laptops require more than 12v.

I've been using a universal adapter similar to This One for many years to recharge the battery on a number of laptops. There are different ones on the market and you need to ensure that you buy one capable of the correct output voltage and with the right tip.

Alternatively you may find one in This List which is specific to your HP laptop (I assume it's an HP as the lead you mentioned is for HP).

No because your laptop is unlikely to be 12V. They are usually 19V. You will need a proper car charger.

Just type the make & model of your laptop in the search box (ebay) followed by car charger and it should bring up plenty of choice

Most are 19v and lot of the modern ones have a centre pin which is a smart charger sense pin. This company can supply chargers for most laptops it was the only place I could get one for my new HP, if you can't find your model listed there is an enquiry form.

The universal 12v to variable voltages up to 19v seem to work OK for me. They usually come with a range of end plugs too. Even if the end plug isn't right it's easy enough to connect the right one to the wires with a bit of patience and a soldering iron. Just remember the stripy wire is the positive one.

I've also got a 12v to Macbook adapter, a Chinese one which violates the Apple patent on the Magsafe plug, but at a far more reasonable price than the ridiculous sum demanded by Apple. Works fine.
